Heading to have a look at a 2002 s2 (deposit down on it, in fact), on Thursday now! Excitement time.

Fingers crossed for you Mike.

But don’t be rushed or bullied into one. Others will emerge from time to time

Thanks Campbell. Good advice. I am trying hard to resist all that. But I have had a long chat with the previous owner (its with a dealer now) and although higher mileage (I am just gonna drive it anyway) it sounds like it's had all the 'bits' done (radiator, suspension refresh, head gasket, etc.) and been really well looked after. Let's wait and see!

Sounds promising. History matters. These are fickle wee cars…!

It’s done almost the whole of the a1, and after arrival been to straiton Halfords and back absolutely fine. (BIT NOISY THOUGH - at least on A1). Engine etc seems good, at least so far (temperatures very steady/solid). Springs/dampers are <10k miles old, though I cannot see (on car or in paperwork) if it’s had a full set of new bushes/ball joints.

Only issue is one that it had when I saw it - the gearshift was hilariously bad. The whole central trim piece with the hand-brake etc. rocks and moves when you try to change gear, and no self centering on the lever… It turns out that the pressed metal ‘cage’ for the shifter mechanism is just totally snapped all along the bottom edge (where there is (was?) a 90 degree bend in it to make the flat section where it bolts to the floor). Am taking it for an actual expert to look at the other (oily) end this week, hopefully that will fix the self centering. It only took me about 200 miles before I could reliably do 2nd—>3rd, with whole mechanism moving around, each gear is in a different place each time…)

Oh, and the steering wheel squeaks on the column cowling. Oh and there are some rattles.

Oh and there are some rattles.
I'd be concerned if there weren't any 😆

Hope the gearshift isn't too big a job.

Spent 2 hours this afternoon fiddling with the drivers side window mechanism.

I now have amazingly precise control over the way in which the window rattles, no control over whether it does or not.

This might be worth a watch for the gear shift repair or replacement.

Thanks Dark! I had seen that shifter before. It looks great. I had not seen the video though. I am very, very tempted but trying to wait to see if an initial look over of the cars brings up anything else requiring more urgent attention. And then... we'll see.

OK then.

It’s 2002 elise with (I think) the sport touring pack? it’s got some carpets.

Other spec: assorted rattles, partially crap gear shift, worrying creak from right rear under acceleration when turning left, possible grumbly wheel bearing (hard to to tell over all the other nosies), more stonechips than I saw when I bought it.

I took this nice photo of it this evening, first drive with the roof off (incidentally, couldn’t seem to get the side rail things to locate at rear when replacing it afterwards?):

Image

Had to walk back down the road to collect some bits after the front left indicator made a break for freedom (only the seal left the car, found it fairly easily). When I looked up and saw the view, the photo needed to be taken.

Still enjoying it. Thinking it might need more bits and pieces than i thought it would when I bought it. Never mind, we’ll see.

Its been a long while coming - delayed by work travel, holidays, and me encountering covid - but finally the car is getting a bit of attention/service next Monday at CMC. Increasingly worryingly loud noise coming from (i think) a wheel bearing which I would/will be relieved to be rid of. After this I hope I drive it a bit more! Perhaps I should make a ‘garage’ type thread for it at this stage. And hopefully get to a lotus meeting with it too.
