Glasgow commuting knowledge

Post by douglasgdmw » Tue Nov 29, 2022 5:43 pm

As we have now moved to Ayrshire, Sandra has managed to get herself a new job in Glasgow to stop a painfull commute through to Edinburgh.

As it's in Glasgow city centre, her thoughts were to go to Shields Road Park and Ride and then take the Subway into the city centre.

Just wondering whether anyone has local knowledge of this Park & Ride
- problems with getting spaces or do you have to be there at silly o'clock
- good security for female commuters travelling alone
- adequate security for vehicles

Cheers

Did the Prestwick to Glasgow commute for years…

Not sure where you are commuting from but it was the X77 coach all the way for me did it for 10plus years. Always found it comfortable less annoying than the train and cheaper and it dumps you at bothwell street right in the middle.

Unfortunately the sheilds road park and ride doesn’t insulate you from the traffic horrors of the M77/M8 merge so no way I’d drive.

Personally I’d just try each option for a week or 2 each. But driving is horrific especially as the bridge parapet work is going on.

Rawsco,

Thanks for that, we are in East Ayrshire outside of Galston in the countryside.

Suspect any commute via bus would probably mean Sandra leaving the car somewhere like Kilmarnock/Ayr/Troon which may negate any time saved. However definitelty food for thought if it proves a nightmare commute.

X76 from killie might a a shout if you can find somewhere in killie to park up? A lot of folks get on and off on Glasgow road just before the route joins the A77 which is a fairly residential area so should be easy to dump the car.

I use a multi- storey car park on High St if I take the car but we get a company discounted rate. Worth checking if there are season ticket deals with Q-park /NCP or any of the big companies

By the time you get to Shields road the worst of the traffic is long over. When I was coming Southside to Monkton each day at 7:30 I'd often see traffic going into the city Q'd from where I joined silverburn all the way up the hill at Darnley. When we were in Symington and Jo committed to Stobhill for a while it was always an hour plus, sometimes 2h because of the M77 > M8 traffic.

I'd be tempted to try driving to the Rail park and ride at Patterton and getting the train in from there. Alternatively is driving to Kilmaurs and getting the train in from there an option? Saves going into Killie and dealing with the commuting traffic there.

If she does want to try the bus, Pete on here has lots of on street parking at his place on Glasgow Road, Killie, and a bus stop for the X77 right across the street.

I mean that's like 50 yards from my house.

She could stick it outside my house.

There's a bus stop and everything.

Thanks Pete,

Sandra has been using the car and its been working out ok going to the Shields car park and taking the subway. Obviously is slow once you hit the motorway and pain in the rear when they have issues with the subway.

Think she will continue to take the car as her hours are not fixed so occasionally she has been working later an more convenient than having to rely on a bus service.

I mean we drove in for a couple of years when Millie was at school in Glasgow. You do kind of get used to it.

But there's space in the drive if you change your mind.
