Does anyone have........

Post by jj » Sat Oct 01, 2005 1:24 pm

..... a spare set of wheels and tyres? Or even a spare front and a rear?

Wheels coming off this week to get powdercoated, so either I find wheels to borrow or am carless.

Thanks people.

I have 3 spare wheels that you can borrow 2 front with tyres and 1 back with a bald tyre. I have a spare set of rear tyres but you will have to get one put on the wheel if you want to use it.

I had a search on SELOC, and amongst all the drivel all I could find was a couple of people saying "....I've heard that powdercoating the 12spokes is a bad idea" and ..."a guy once told me his mates brothers pal had problems with a powdercoated 12 spoke".

Anyone got anymore info
?

IIRC, a few people have had 12 spoke wheels shatter whilst driving after they've been powdercoated. Something to do with the wheel being unable to take the temperature required for the coating and it becomes unsafe to use. Safer option would be to paint them but paint will probably chip.

Ali posted this link to pics of an Exige the same colour as his. Interestingly, it also has some stuff about powdercoating, worth a read JJ.

Cheers Si. I read that through today when Ali posted the link.

Also found some of Gareths posts about the subject and this thread

http://forums.seloc.org/viewthread.php? ... #pid706983 .

I called in at the place thats doing them today, and had a chat with the guy; he reckoned any wheel shattering / breaking would be weak in the first place.

Probably as much chance of getting a blowout, not worth worrying about. They have enamelled elise 12spokes before without problem. He is also sorting out a tidy deal for me (and S_E`ers) and I`ll post details in the offers section when I get them back.

Car is on axle stands in garage now!

I saw what happened to Liam Crilly's wheels.

I'd considered doing it a while ago - after seeing broken spokes, I reconsidered.

Looking at the number of cars with painted / coloured wheels and the failure ratio, its not worth worrying about it.

I'd maybe reconsider if it was going to be tracked a lot, but its not.

Matt black on the way. :D

Okay - but I can't remember - have you got the 5 spoke wheels or the 12 spoke (later) wheels.

There are not that many cars with the 12 spokers powder coated. 5 spokers, yeah, plenty - but they are not a problem.

They are by two different manufacturers. AWI made the 5 spokers and I haven't heard of any failures with them. Rimstock make the 12 spokers and they *are* prone to cracking if they're re-baked (which they do when powder coating)

Just as long as you have all the info. :)

Blatant Hijack alert.....

What about S1 111s six spokes?

I'm kind of tempted to kerb them a bit just to give me a good excuse to go for the black wheels stealth bomber look.

I like....
