Scottish Elises

Have just been offered primarily for a joke, but thinking would make ace second car, or first until the Liz comes!

As with the VX and the Audi being offered it at trade price, it only needed £200 worth of airbag work done to it and other than that aint very exciting 2000 W Reg LAND ROVER DISCOVERY 2.5 Td5 GS 7SEATER - would be good to have a load lugger, and diesel and my understanding is that it has the TD5 diesel engine which is considerably better on the old consumption front!

Put it this way, would be picking it up for a shade under 6k, and having done and hours worth of research I cannot find one retailing for less than 8k, or anyone you would touch! My limited financial skills, are like every other car i have bought trade price saying BUY BUY BUY!

The alternative, and will find out tomorrow, whatever is sitting on my friends used Merc stock list circa the 6-7k price list! The Merc 190e we have has just gone bang, only the exhaust thankfully, but took our neighbours run around which is a E300 petrol fully loaded today and whilst guzzling, it was a truely relaxing ride!!!

I know this isn't going to be a popular thread, and i will find a forum where people will give me good 4x4 advice, but reckoning there will be a few who have had one!

I run a Disco as a second car to the Elise although mine is an S1 in V8, my old man has had two S2 Discos both in TD5 without any real problems.

I recon it is the ideal second car. Quite comfy, ideal in bad weather, 7 seat (probably), tow mountains. Expect 30 odd mpg and less than spectacular performance but does cruse comfortably at 70 to 80 with a bit left over to overtake.

The price looks good, I suspect that you could drive it for 2 years without depreciation.

In short go for it unless you want to do 25K motorway miles a year

Both mum and dad had one. Not a great deal of room in any of the rear seats. Suspension is very floaty and hugely underpowered. But that aint why you are buying it.

I loved my DISCOVERY 2.5 Td5 GS 7 SEATER and my ideal situation would be to own an Elise and a Disco. I thought it was a great all rounder and had loads of laughs in it.

The high driving position does allow the driver to see far further ahead and this can mean that a good pace can be maintained so I actually found it pretty good on A and B roads, or even where there was no road. Great in bad weather and fun on the Dukes Pass when it was soaking wet. The handling is not great but its not that bad and I even managed to pass a couple of cars when I took it on track at knockhill.

I did have a couple of minor mechancal problems which were sorted under the garage warranty but wouldn't have liked to have paid for them myself. I only traded mine in for the Punto as I needed to free up some money.

I'd certainly go for it

Used to drive an automatic one now and again at Edinburgh Airport (YELLOW FLASHY LIGHT spec) and that was good fun. Bonnet seemed to go on forever!

The weather is supposed to be getting worse over the next month or two. Buying a liz just now would only make you depressed when you cant take it out! Or when you do take it out, you get soaked!

Nae leather and nae Auto box- The two items i would have liked! The seats look rough in cloth, and the gearbox from memory of having driven one, isn't the smoothest in manual form.

Although being a 2.5td, what realistically should i be expecting mpg wise? Someone mentioned 30mpg, is that it!

Hmmm! I still think for the money that it's worth a punt - it wont have a hard life!!!

You’ll struggle to get over 30. Might be 35 on a long motorway run at 70.

Both my business parters drive Discos (one a mark 2, the other a 1yr old mark 3) which I have driven a few times. Not my cup of tea I must say - no doubt great off road, but both are a bit gutless and soggy to drive on road. The mark 3 is at least pretty refined, but the mark 2 with a manual box is rather agricultural and isnt even isnt even that roomy. They have both suffered quite a few build quality and reliability issues too. An old Merc estate would be my choice for wafting around in roomy comfort - in fact I have been thinking about getting one myself to replace my Focus estate.

Having said that, I can see why some people like the sort of invincible feeling you get sitting high up in a big tank, so each to their own I guess.

Next door neighbours Discovery has just gone pop . Oil light came on but he knew it needed a top up and drove the 300 metres home . Next morning it would not turn over .The oil pump has sheard and they want £6k for a new engine. He has sold it and is getting a Range Rover
