When you consider the embodied energy etc that goes into a new car, that must off-set at least some of the pollution older cars cause. Our throwaway attitudes are surely a huge cause of environmental damage...
How many people drive cars over 10 years old I wonder? And what sort of mileage do they do? Wouldn't have thought it was a significant proportion. And in terms of stuff like carbon emissions how much better are new cars anyway?
Sounds like simplistic answer to a complex problem, that penalises the minority while the rest drive their SUV's on the school/supermarket runs...
Be interesting to see some accurate figures (not holding breath).....

Where are they going to get accurate statistics from? Manufacturers? The same manufacturers who will make more money by selling more new cars? (Germany is a big manufacturer of cars so their economy will benefit from this sort of law, as the strict MOT in Japan benefits the Japanese economy).
Politicians will like it as it ticks the green box (any politico will tell you itis better to be seen to be doing something than not do anything. even if that something is rubbish). and it will, finally, force people onto public transport. But only poor people. whilst dramatically increasing actual pollution.

Who thinks this is legal? Not me! I await the first court challenge followed by huge costs on both sides proving a somewhat academic point.
BTW, on cold winter days, you can have as many catalytic convertors as you like, but pootling to work through mostly stationary traffic won't actually see them doing much - will we ban all petrol engines from town at that point?

You could make it legal, I imagine with a bye law that stated all cars within the city limits must comply to a <very> emissions standard. In the event of a vehicle failing a spot test they will be fined heavily.
You aren't banning cars over ten years old, you are just making a byelaw to cut down on city pollution. No more illegal than Livingstone banning the poor from the London.

I don't give a stuff, I NEVER drive into Edinburgh City Centre now - except to visit Robin - and I rarely drive in any city. So if they eventually decided my car was "too old", so be it. When Edinburgh city centre eventually implodes under the lack of passing trade and general economic decline, I will laugh and laugh all the way home.
I only go into Edinburgh to work. And even then I avoid that as much as poss thanks to broadband and VPNs

Fecking Edinburgh council at its best (read worst). Perhpas they should remember when something like 97% voted to scrap the proposal to charge motorists to enter Edinburgh - what a waste of council tax payers money all that was! This "scheme" is about as likely to fail.
Anyway if you love your MGB or whatever enough then Im sure you wouldnt mind sticking in a modern engine with CAT, fuel injection etc etc etc and stick 2 fingers up at the t0ssers that advise Edinburgh cooncilers.

Why not hold a demo like the Tivs did, that would help, or maybe a traction engine rally in the city centre... 
Nah, being inventive types, why not fit a stage 2 off a S2 to your S1 leaving the old tail pipes in place with a hair drier installed to blow sweet smelling lavender scent out of the visible pipes, while your evil polluting oil burning k-series exhales under the car.

No expert on public law but not convinced that the Council have authority to ban cars in that way. There are national standards for emissions and if you meet them then you should be OK. On a practical level can you imagine the difficulties when every city has its own, different, emissions rules. 
To go off topic don’t you hate Councils and Councillors. A bunch of self important nobodies who love to shout about their mandate. Mandate my rear, turn out in most local election is 20 to 25%. If we want to increase efficiency in the public sector we should make one in four politicians redundant and give the rest early retirement.
