According to Murrays, an official Lotus service centre is opening up in Aberdeen - though this will be expensive if its anything like Murrays.
My lotus has been the cheapest car I've ever run, competing with an old 1990 mini and a 91 Pug 106.
There isn't much to go wrong with them Rover engine so cheapish parts, good on fuel circa 40mpg. My insurance is £800 im 25 and that includes slight mods (exhaust, induction) would have been around £600 without.
Servicing is expensive if you use a main dealer. £325 for an oil change basically.

Like you I did research before buying, mostly about what to look for. I didnt pay much attention to what folk said they cost to run bcause I think it varies so much, mostly dependent onwhat car you buy,
My 99 was bought from a dealer in Feb 05, I then bought it privately in April 05. It had full history, a warranty remaining, and had been sorted out. Since then I have had to spend about 13quid on it through things breaking, namely the windows and the boot catch, but I think I got a good one, that had the suspension and breaks in good state.
All the cash ive spent has been on stuff it doesnt really need, like an exige exhaust, new stereo, de-cat, refurb wheels etc, SE Stickers!
Petrol is not bad, you wont really pay attention to that, and insurance wil vary obviously dependent on age, if your young expect $. If the car your looking at is in Scotland im sure someon here can chck it out before you travel long distances to see it or whatever or go along if your not sure.

There are a few Abz members floating about on here - they should be able to report on a suitable independant shortly.
Welcome along, by the way - very active scene up in Abz, just watch out for that tut bloke
(you'll get that in-joke soon enough)

It's not totally comprehensive, but here's a good guide to the basic hassles:

Engine-wise, I can't praise Autoquick enough for the work they did for me recently (Whytemyers Ave off Langstracht). Spoke to some local engine builders who gave me horror stories about how long it takes to change a timing belt on the S1 (as access is tight) but ended up using Autoquick for various reasons...
I dropped the car off the night before and they phoned me before lunch - job done, very reasonable (£5 under quote) and the guy ran through the job with me after. And they're right across the road from the Reg Vardy Rover parts desk. Which can only be handy
Otherwise Jim King or Ricky Gauld both know the 'K' inside out... And both are a little closer to you. Though realistically, once you get past the initial problems with jacking points etc, any well trusted local garage should be able to do your work. The Elise is a pretty simple car afterall.
