Game consoles

Post by Kev » Thu Jan 18, 2007 8:09 pm

Since I've got at least another 6 weeks off work and have started to get some strength back in my fingers. I've been thinking of buying something to pass the time a bit better. I was thinking of getting an Xbox 360 or a psp, what do you game gurus think is the best buy? Was trying to get a Wii, but getting impatient so was thinking the 360, mainly due to that Gears of war and call of duty 3 looks awesome. I need something before I start climbing the walls. Told the g/f that it will help with the physio, so hopefully convinced her it’s a good buy, if not, I’m sure if I annoy her enough it will.

I'm a bit of a PC gamer, anything that involves blowing things up or shooting things. What’s it like playing a first person shooter with a game pad? Only ever used a keyboard and a mouse. I suppose it just takes time to get used to it.

IMHO, I really got into GT4 on PS2 when it came out. It was my entertainment when I was in plaster a few years ago.

Grab a cheap xbox, larger back catalogue of quality games. Not really any 'must haves' on the 360 yet, Gears of War is very pretty but not that great to play IMO. COD is pretty good considering it was rushed out in 6 months but FPS's on a console are annoying if you're used to playing on a PC. Depends how much you want to spend but Argos were doing a deal on the xbox with 4 quality games (Project Gotham 2 Halo2 etc.) for £49 just before Christmas, not sure if it's still on though.

PSP's are good if you do a lot of traveling. Killzone for PSP is excellent if you like shooters as it's been designed for that platform. Also, some <cough> firmware malarkey and torrent software will soon boost your games library pretty quickly...in a try before you buy way of course...or so I'm told

Like Dominic, I'm still playing GT4 on the trusty PS2 so don't overlook that one, and if you like football games then PES6 makes choosing a PS2 a no-brainer!

Whatever you go for, let me know the types of games you like and I'll let you know the best ones to get. Played most games on all the consoles.

syphon filter dark mirror and medal of honor:heroes on the PSP are sh1t hot IMO.
not only are the single player games good, but the wireless infrastructure modes are good for web play and will eat your 6 weeks up no problem.

there are some good games starting to be developed on the PSP now and if you have your sights on a PS3 in the future, then the PSP acts as an attachment/ extension to some games. IIRC they were talking about using the PSP screen as a rear view mirror in racing games etc.

you can surf the web from it too which is handy if you are really lazy and can't be arsed getting out of bed!

I just can't get used to the controller on the Xbox360.

Strange choices tho... XB360 (console) or PSP (handheld) ??? I'd go for a PS2 & GT4.. PSP is good (my kids have got 1 each).. Wipeout is OK... but the games won't keep you entertained as long as a PS2/Xbox360 (IMO).
I have no signature.

Busted!

I have an X-Box as I got fed up trying to keep up with PC specs and they are pretty darn cheap nowadays. I like my driving games, Need for Speed Underground and Forza Mtorsport, but Hitman Blood Money worked well on a game pad. I had the same reservations about gamepads but it isn't bad at all.

Played PS/PS2 prior to Xbox launch and since LIVE came about wouldn't be without it.

for me 360 would be the only choice, fine titles on all platforms but the simple LIVE experience is fine

FPS is just a matter of getting used to it and adjusting the sensitivity to suit your reactions and accuracy

GoW is first class particularly live, very intense and direct, CoD3 has excellent scale and can be really good with a full lobby, lots of tactical options if you get a good team around you
if evolution don't take care of it, redesign it

If the Wii is interesting you - you should be able to pick one up pretty easily now the hype is dying down. My mate picked one up in Woolworths just walking off the street the other day.

Also don't overlook the Nintendo DS as an innovative bit of fun kit!
