Oh no more tyre musings

Post by bertieduff » Sun Feb 04, 2007 2:32 pm

Put '48's on the car a few months ago.

Thing is, everyone seems to rave about them, but I really find them scarey for grip compared to the potenzas I had before.

On any damp or less than great surface it's easy to lock up or spin them at stupidly low speeds/revs.

Having paxed on a set in the wet at Knockhill, they seemed to be glued to the track in comparison to mine....

Obviously wouldn't expect them to be great in the wet, but I'm now driving like my gran.

Thoughts?

You need to get them up to temperature for them to work properly. That's why they felt much better on track. Unfortunately its not easy to get them warm on the road when its wet/slippy.

exactly that mate - they're not a tyre for the faint hearted in winter, but they'll come on song when the road temps increase. Check your tyre pressures are correct too, Neil or the like should be able to tell you the best cold temps.

Don't use them on road, there's not point if you have another set of wheels. Stick some AD07s on and you'll be much better off.

Well I hope so...ahem, Dan did it

I realise they're wasted on the road, especially at this time of year, but they came already fitted to the Oz's. Two of my original rims are knackered, so I don't have a full spare set at the moment.

Just amazed at the difference between the two sets of 48's....as are passers-by when I end up facing the wrong way at a death-defying 25mph...

Now beginning to appreciate the difference temperature actually makes- not something I have to even think about in the shed, which only makes 25mph when on tow... :)

Cheers for the words of wisdom, as ever.

I have found that on the 135r they grip well if loaded gently but give up real snappy in the wet, choose when to push really carefully!
As for developing temperature in the wet and this time of year, you'd need to be braver than me.

True, bought it was needing new 48s and there is no way I would be putting them on to waste them on crappy icy/salty roads.

I've still got my A048's on, and haven't switched back to my winter wheels. Admi8tedly haven't been using it much, and have enjoyed the slippy conditions, although scared my passenger last night on the way home from collecting dinner! Couldn't resist it :D

Have you checked the pressures they are at. it can make a difference.

Tyre pressures is your problem.
You should aim to run them at 24 psi at warm operating temperature.
This means that if you're hard on track you could have them at 24 but when they cool down you find out that they are as low as 17 psi!

On the road, on this weather 22F-24R is a good bet (or, if you have a lighter S1, 20-22)
