Does anyone have this kit? or know anyone that does? If so what do you think?
I'm contemplating it for this summer.

I have it's little brother the 165kit.
Personally I think it's the business. Makes the car slightly less friendly at low speed/part throttle as it invokes valve overlap which makes the car slightly jerky but above 3500rpm it's great!

Intersting to see that QED have changed their name to QED Motorsport Ltd.
I wonder if the stories are still as bad as ever.
PTP however are a proper company

I find it strange that Scotland is the only place PTP have a good reputation.
In my opinion, they are over-priced and the mapping is shocking. Every one I have driven has seriously lacked mid-range torque.
I would recommend Dave Andrews

My only "issue" with DVA is that it's not new castings - the PTP map could be better but I'm guessing it's mapped on the side of safety.
Mid Torque isn't an issue in the car that USED to be mine (cheers Ed)

I guess maybe its because its late but I don't get your point.
Sorry.

p.s. I was just expressing my opinion and direct experiences of the products. No offence was intended.

It's horses for courses. If you want a guaranteed product with no hassle striaght out of the box, passes it's MOT, etc., etc. then the PTP kit is hard to beat.
If you add it all up, I don't think there is that much in it price wise - at least there wasn't when I got the kit for the shed a couple of years back.
My only gripe with them was in-trafffic where the car would kangaroo a lot until you figured out just how to manage the clutch and throttle to minimise the hassle.
It would be nice if you could remap the ECU they provide and I know they were working on using an Emerald instead which would enable that.
What else is wrong with the product? I know some people have had hassles with the Toyota engine kits, but for the K-series?
Cheers,
Robin

I don't think I get my point either Dan

No offence taken in anyway BTW.
I think what I wanted to say is that DVA, who I know well, sells a completely different package by hand tuning the existing castings. While PTP supply brand new CNC castings with a complete kit of new parts. The true costs are not too disimilar at customer level. I agree that the PTP is not 100% mapped with some kits due I beleive to A/ the lack of vernier pulleys to acheive the correct valve timing everytime and B/ The lack of open source to their ecu which pprevents the smoothing of any blips with a wideband kit. PTP don't use verniers so that any garage or home mechanic can swap over the heads with no tuning skills or equipment and get a good result. They should sort out their ecu however. Now DVA can hand build you a fantastic engine and if it's mapped at Emerald then it'll be fabulous....I have one here but it needed Dave himself to get the very best from it. Value for money both are very close depending on where you are and what you really want.

Last time I spoke to Richard at PTP they were recommending vernier pulleys as an add-on for the PTP170 - I should ask him what the lift at TDC is supposed to be for those engines - I have a set of verniers so we could experiment on a suitable car (i.e. Fd's or Ross's) to see if the verniers make much difference to the lumpiness of the running.
TBH, though, I think the lumpiness is the ECUs fault - if you slap on a MEMS to run the same car changing nothing else, it runs sweet as a nut.

Robin

FD's cam timing is spot on
If PTP used emerald then that may sort it
Why don't we try a K3 modded one on Ross's car?

Robin, I wasn't aware that PTP did a kit for the Toyota engine, and I can't find anything about one on their website. Upgrades for the normally aspirated Yota engine generally seem to be very thin on the ground - perhaps not too surprising when the standard lump is already squeezing 190bhp from a 1.8. Can you elaborate on the PTP one?
Cheers,
Mark

Cams:

Plus all the usual other bollocks (exhausts and air filter stuff) is also available - if in doubt, give them a ring to see what they have.
There is no stuff for internals and I don't know what the ECU has to say about the change in cams, but it must work somehow or other.
If it were me, I wouldn't go this route, but it might suit some.
Cheers,
Robin
