HUGE THANKS to Robin for his help today.

He helped me over the phone yesterday with my imobiliser problem, but i was getting nowhere, so he said if i got the car towed through he would see what he could do.

After a traumatic tow trip through in the rain with no wipers, he made us bacon rolls and we got on with the problem solving.

spent from about 10am till 6pm, including a trip to 2 halfords shops, and a lift home, and we had got somewhere, but still not running. I had to dissappear as i'm nightshift tonight, and expected to get through to help work (well, stand and watch) on it before cadwell, but i just got a message that he had went back out to the garage and solved the problem.

So what was it? Badger eaten the electrics? Shug make up your loom?

Someone told me that electric stuff "contains smoke" and it's very bad if you let it escape, this is the full extent of my electrics training.

not really sure, combination of water and rust in electrics, from my car living outside. Havent really got to the bottom of the original alarm/immobiliser problem but we have it running until it can be properly repaired.

Neil, did you find the car and keys?

The problem was a relay had filled with water and the water had rusted the innards leading to short circuits that would reverse power the ignition circuit and drain the battery.

The alarm then got it's knickers in a twist because it thought someone was trying to hotwire the ignition circuit. I suspect it's now dead, perhaps from getting funny voltages where it doesn't expect them, or perhaps because the siren battery got drained.

But in the end I cannot be sure why the alarm is upset - it sort of does some sensible stuff from time to time - I am hoping it's just very wet and will start to work once the car gets hot and dry (rough love required).

I am surprised that the honda conversion didn't retain the MFRU - instead they use three off the shelf relays, but these aren't moisture tight, so not really suitable for use without an external enclosure of some sort (i.e. not just bolted to the bulkhead), which they don't have. Obviously OK for dry use and garaged cars, but all-weather cars are going to have problems I think.

Echoes of problems I had with the Noble - bulkhead mounted electrics rusted away - and separately alarm would go off uncontrollably after driving through standing water.

and another thanks from me for the use of robin's garage/tools/brains. was at it for about 9 hours. changed the rear discs and pads, also got the undertray off and fixed the gear linkage so for now all is well.

No! We never let them win at games (though they sometimes win properly) - they will get their chance when they're older and I am sure they will rub it in then!
