Copy of email to Evo mag subscribers dated 2nd March:
Dear Robert
It's a frustrating business this publishing lark. It's March 1st as I
write, and sitting on my desk is the new copy of evo. I'd really like
it to be sitting on your desk too, but we've got a couple of
exclusives in this issue that prohibit it being in your hands until
March 7th.
The cars you're not allowed to see until then are the new BMW M3 and
the Bentley Brooklands, both of which are to be unveiled at this
year's Geneva show. BMW even specified the time at which you are
allowed to see the new M3 (it's 18:30 GMT to be exact), but that's
taking this embargo nonsense a little too far in my view, as this is
well after the time the car will be revealed to the press at the show.
I blame the internet for all the nervousness that surrounds new car
reveals today. In the old days we used to do a photo shoot, design the
feature, send the whole lot off to the printer and, finally, bundle the
mags up ready for distribution. The whole process took around two weeks.
But with the advent of digital photography and the appearance of
hundreds of voracious car websites around the world, a carefully
crafted car reveal can be wrecked by a couple of clicks on a computer.
The industry has responded by burrowing deeper underground and
releasing less and less information to the media on the run-up to a new
model.
I'd be interested to hear your views on these new sources of new car
news. Do you look to the web to get the latest on a new model or do you
still like to rely on what appears in evo? Drop us a line at
letters@evo.co.uk and let us know.
Also inside issue 103 is probably the most expensive feature we've
ever done: trying to max a Vauxhall Monaro VXR 500. We first had a go
in December, taking a Monaro and a Lotus Carlton to Germany to see
which was truly the fastest Vauxhall of all time. But when the time
came to do the runs, the Monaro developed a problem. And as that
problem involved oil gushing from the engine block, it turned out to be
terminal too.
With photographer and journo bills ticking, Vauxhall sent another
Monaro out to Germany, but by the time it arrived it had started to
rain. It was still raining the next day, and the following day's
forecast was the same, so there was nothing for it but to abandon the
attempt with nothing to show for four days' effort.
What you see in this month's issue is the second attempt. It sounds so
easy: take Monaro to Germany, max it, return to UK. It isn't easy at
all, as you'll read in John Barker's story. The really frustrating
thing is that it would be a doddle to do on the way to Germany on the
beautifully surfaced, deserted French autoroutes. Though whether you'd
get back to the UK with your freedom intact is open to debate...
Speak to you next month.

Mines arrived today... Opel GT doesn't seem to hit the spot.
