Which GPS

After Verian got lost again going to pick up Clare from Edinburgh Uni yesterday, I have decided to buy her a car GPS. I have an Acer N35 PDA, works for me, but she always seems to render it useless.

The TomTom seems to be the one of choice, but are there better alternatives equivalent to the 710 at around £300. Dont need the 910 with the USA.

Just seen this one on eBay, as new, at buy it now £170. It says it has the 510 Sim, so just checking that this is as it should be, Item number: 290097384462.

I know there are lots of you with them, so makes sense to get advice.

Buy her a usable map of Edinburgh instead

Katie wants one as well but I refuse to buy one until it is your mobile, GPS navigator, MP3 player, bluetooth interface to car stereo and whatever else one needs. That's just becoming practical now (I think the O2 XDA does most of the above), but still expensive. In another year or two they will be ~100 quid I think (especially if purchased as part of a mobile contract) at which point I'll buy one.

I know someone with a phone on t-mobile that does everything but interface to the stereo and it wasn't at all expensive. He runs the Tom Tom software on his.

I have one of the TOMTOM GO300 standalone units which is excellent.
The good thing about it is the simple user interface and how mobile it is.

I was considering one with a PDA a couple of years ago when i bought the tomtom, but it just looked too complicated... faffing around with the software, cables etc. Its not that I am useless with technology or anything, I just wanted something I could pop into my laptop bag when flying down south and picking up a hire car at the other end.

The screen on it is really clear and I think you can use the 700 as a handsfree unit through bluetooth. You can also connect it up to tomtom traffic through your phone and it will recalculate your route for you around the accident/roadworks.

I know there will probably be an argument that you can do all this with the PDA version, but its really simple with the standalone units - my mum uses one successfully and she can hardly work her mobile phone!

TomTom One gets my vote.

Even my (now ex) mrs could use it without a problem. No point in paying for anything more IMHO.

i quite dont get the point why he is selling a TOMTOM 710 with a 510 chip. (newer model with older chip?? its usually is the other way round

i wouldnt go for a mobile phone with a GPS (PDA makes more sense). mainly because the mobile screen can be quite small... and the chances u will be fined £60 and 3 points

tom tom is the leader in the market for GPS. (i use NAVMAN, and it is %$*&^%

) i personally think the SNOOPER SYRIUS is quite good (from what i have read)
it is not worth goin for a GPS unit which is more expensive because it has more maps. (u can always get the maps from friends or download them), so i would go in for the UK map only version

She actually bought an Edinburgh map yesterday before she came home. Unfortunately it did not come with instructions................

Thanks for the offers, but I have the Acer N35, and she really needs a standalone unit that is simple to use. Dixons are doing the TT710 online for £231 with free delivery, so not much point in buying a used one on eBay.

With the 3 pointer rule for using your mobby in the car they snuck in map reading too. Was in Autoexpress a few weeks back. Farce.

Tomtom on my mobby with volume turned up. 2gb storage for maps and music, £12 inline pm transmitter and music via car stereo.

Free phone
<£50 for GPS etc
<£20 for in car music

Mind you the menus are sloooooooooooooooow.

Tut,

I also bought a Tom Tom One recently - It is excellent. Does everything you need and is sensibly priced ( UK only version is about about £165 I think, you might also consider the European version as it's cheaper to buy this upfront than buy the additional map / SD card later )

It is light years better than the much more expensive Navman which I previously used.

I've got a loan of my dad's Tom Tom One just now and the UK map is out of date. Do I have to pay to get the latest map or is there a free way of getting it?

If you register on the TOMTOM website, you can download the latest maps for free.
Doesnt always guarantee that it will have updated your road though.

There's also a feedback section where you can tell them of new roads IIRC.

Hi tut,
I had a TTN700 till some 'crack head' stole it out of our my hire car when we were visiting 'darn sarf'
.......along with the wifes handbag, house keys, mobile phone, etc, etc,...

I liked the TTN700 and was going 2 upgrade to the 910, then I saw the Garmin Nuvi 660!
What a beast! same basic features plus a few more usefull ones. i.e. not just gimmicks!
What sold it for me was the free lifetime subscription to Traffic Info. Bought it at Halfrauds just after xmas for £349.
Slimmer, nice wide screen and you can slip it in to your pocket unlike the TTN910, ooeerr missuss.......
