What's your favorite road

Post by Caveat Lector » Fri Mar 30, 2007 8:00 pm

So what is your favorite road for a drive? With the best weather since I bought the Elise starting I'm looking for good places to go for some decent driving. Preferably within easy reach of Livingston.

Last week we went up to Callander, then round the Duke's Pass to Aberfoyle for a spot of lunch before returning the same way. Found the Duke's Pass a great fun road to scoot along (Never breaking the speed limit of course). Where else do you suggest?

I know of the A816 between Lochgilphead and Oban, but the others are unfamiliar to me. The A83 from Tarbet round to Lochgilphead's not bad either if memory serves me right.

Driven those roads more times than I can remember (my folks have a holiday place in Lochgilphead) some good roads.

A701 Edinburgh to Moffat, then A708 to to St Mary's Loch, easy to get to from Livingston and hard roads to beat, also the B709 Innerleithen to Langholm. B6399 Hawick to Newcastleton. Further South into Northern Englandshire, the B6277 Alston to Barnard Castle.

Come along for a blat on Sunday, we'll probably use the Moffat road, and some of the Leadhills road are pretty good.

The Bonchester Bridge road from Hawick to the border at the A68 is a blast (B6088 is it's proper title I think) - it has some of everything and always puts a smile on your face.

The A72 from Peebles to Selkirk is good too (makes a nice loop with the B709, A708 too if you want a quick blast).

:-)

Mr Lector... was it you I saw in Uphall last week? I was in a yellow one and exchanged waves with a car fitting the description of yours.

For a 'quick' burger run, Livi in to uphall, take the Threemiletown cut-off over to Burger King at the bridge... great for lunch times (thats why I was in Uphall).
I have no signature.

Oh so many to choose from.

A701 Moffat-Edin (do it that way, the first section is like your own hillclimb!)

Callander - Lix Toll

A939 "Lecht Road"

B709 Innerleithen to Lockerbie

A702 from Abington-ish to Thornhill then onward (forget number) to New Galloway then onward again (forget number) towards Newton Stewart. Part of this was MADE FOR Elises it is so tight yet smooth.

Fettercairn to Aboyne or Strachan (the "Cairnomount Road")

The South Deeside Road

Tomintoul to Dufftown

Inverness (well, Tore roundabout) to Ullapool and on to Lochinver or Laxford Bridge.

Laxford Bridge to Lairg.

Tore roundabout to Brora via "the Struie Brae".

Brora to Ledmore Junction via Lairg.

Garve - Kinlochewe - Gairloch - Dundonnell.

I'm tired out now...that should keep you going for a year or two! There should be a Campaganza trip or two this summer which will take in some of that lot, especially the north-western stuff. Watch this space.
