S1 111S or Std S1???

Post by Zippy » Wed Apr 18, 2007 1:34 pm

Folks, I believe I'll be getting the cheque for my car imminently :P so I'm now looking for a replacement. I've drawn up a shortlist of cars that consists mostly of Std and 111S S1's and was wondering if anyone could comment on the :drive differences between them.

Thanks,
Iain.

Personally, I'd seek out a 135.

Failing that, I'd get an S1 with S2 suspension and then think about getting a couple more horses out of it to nudge it to about 130+ish.

just my 2p-worth

I doubt many people will owned both, but in my experience the main differences are:-

1. VVC engine in the S - circa 145 horses -v- 118
2. Close Ratio gearbox in the S, great for driving, less so for cruising
3. Headlight covers
4. Clear indicators on front & rear
5. Rear spoiler of negligable aerodynamic effect on the S
6. 6-spoke wheels on the S, still came with P0 tyres

Suspension is the same as far as I can recall (i.e. red konis) - may have come with LSS?

Thanks guys, I'm hoping someone can enlighten me on how different they are behind the wheel. I'm assuming it's probably negligible but if someone knows any different please shout.

As you were...

Faster, better accelerating and noisier at motorway speeds ;)

Seriously though, if that's the advice you're after, you're better off getting behind the wheel of any you fancy and finding out for yourself :) I know that's not too helpful, but if it were my fistful of benjamins, I'd want to know what driving experience I preferred, not what someone tells me I should :)

CR box can be fixed by refitting the cat and earplugs. Or just go deaf....

111S Deffo :thumbsup

Wheels were bigger too. No MMC discs, but they were cross drilled.

Less 111s's about though so may get more bang for your buck looking at the standard s1s...

Some std s1s put out 136.4 horses too and with a CR box fitted... there isn't that much performance difference really

If bigger wheels are your thing, there's always plenty of S2 wheels kicking about for a few hundred which fit with spacers... I personally don't really like the 111s wheels that much....

If an s1 is too soft... I'd be looking at the sport 160 !!!... :D

Pleased to hear Zippy will be back on the Loti trail :D

Mate - i'd get a cheap S1 and then make it your own with upgrades and things that you need to change. At that age of car there are going to be a lot of things needed sorted anyway.

I love my little S1, and I'm enjoying the fact that i (well we as team se keeps helping) are working towards having a pretty unique little car set-up for me, and giving it some rough love.

Get on board cheaply and save the money for sorting it exactly the way you want it

The other advantage about gettibng in at low pennies, is you really can let loose on the track nights :D

I'm posting to promote the S1 option, mine will be popping up for sale soon (I have said this many times before but this time it is a must go !) It's a B&C Super 140, I know there is many people sceptical of this non factory model but it does have some engine bits that (claimed by the previous owner I've never r/r'd it) pushes it over 140bhp. Let me know if you may be interested.

I am biased but I think the 111s is a nicer car to drive having driven both! It is a lot more forgiving if there is such a thing needed with the Elise! I find that it doesnt matter what gear you are in the engine will pick up cleanly and go!! I have fun with the CR gearbox, it reminds me of my bike and keeps the engine on the boil. Dont like the ticky tappets when cold though they do quieten down when warm.
Id rather be flying!

I've only owned the 111s but driven standard S1's and the main difference IMO is that the standard car runs out of steam too quickly where as the 111s revs that little bit more. Makes it feel more like a sports car but I like revy engines though. I think the standard car makes more torque lower in the rev range (certainly felt like it) but the 111s more than makes up for this with the extra top end go. The CR box is great although bear in mind that you'll be sitting at 4k rpm @ 80mph, so pretty noisy combined with sports ex and induction - if that's an issue.

The 111s rear wheels are 7.5j compared to the standards 7j so 225 tyres sit better on the rim. The seats are padded more than the standard car and I personally think they look better and are comfier. Don't know if the spoiler does anything but I like the look of it, especially with 160 riser blocks. You also get a different front grill and cheap looking carbon fibre replica dash.

I'm probably biased towards the 111s but if you can find two similar age and condition models and the 111s is not too much more then I think it would be worth it.
