my uncle is an opthalmologist at the royal infirmary. dont know if he'll be of any help to get a pair of specs.
i bought my frames from india and got the glasses fitted from the opticians next to argos in trinity centre. quite happy with their service.
getting a good pair of frames from outside UK saves u a lot of money. looking at close to £100 of savings!

Once you have had an eye test then I can recommend the web based SPEX4LESS
http://www.spex4less.com/
I have had a number of pairs of glasses from them and very pleased at the quality, fit and value they offer. I have recommended them to friends and they too have been pleased with their purchases. Even if you get a pair of glasses elswhere spex4less are worth it for a spare pair. When you visit their site a pop up window will invite you to sunscribe to their guide to online buying and give you discount voucher codes. With these it is possible to buy a complete pair of spectacles with non scratch and anti reflective surfaces for less than £20 if I remember correctly
They also email offers occasionally and I have managed to get Titanium glasses with reactilite lenses for something like £50-£60 and Glasses with Polarising lenses for £30-£40. SO it is worth registering with them. I think I found out about them through moneysavingexpert.com
