camera lens

Post by k12chu » Wed May 09, 2007 12:47 pm

am thinking of buying an additional lens for my Canon EOS 400D
guidance needed from all SLR enthusiasts... paul, david, gareth... who else do we have?

whats the difference between Sigma 70-300mm f 4-5.6 DG Macro & Sigma 70-300mm f 4-5.6 DG APO Macro? the DG APO costs double of DG.

moreover would u go for a
18-200 f 3.5-5.6 or
70-300 f 4.0-5.6 or
28-300 f 3.5-6.3 ?

which is better? sigma or tamron?

What is APO

Basically you *should* see sharper images and less distortion and colour variance.

That said, the basic non-APO lens will still be good (and let's face it, the limit is usually behind the lens unless you're a pro ;) )

It's hard to recommend a lens unless you tell us what you already have and what you're likely to be doing with the camera - portraits? landscapes? night shots? macro?

beginner really. i have an EOS 400D with standard 18-55mm canon lens. i do take a lot of potraits, landscapes, wildlife and macro. so basically looking at an over all usage lens. was not sure if i should go for a 28-300mm.

Really depends on what you are going to take pics of.
This was taken with a relatively cheap Sigma 500mm lense
Image
Very tricky to get as there was minimum light and a near black subject.

I would go for the one with the widest range. BTW if they are not digi lenses then you can add 25-30% on to the lense eg my 500mm = 750mm!

Best speaking with some of the Canon boys - Simon Arnot may point you in the right direction!

I would also check out DPREVIEW.COM as it is a top forum and you will get some really good advice!

Nikon user, and relatively new to it all! kit lens and a 70-300mm Tamron lens, so looking maybe towards the end of the year to get a 18-200VR lens by Nikon as have seen some stunning results, but at £450 i will be holding off a bit!

Cheers,

Dave

I believe Sigma is 'better' than Tamron, but I doubt you (or me) would tell the difference.

I would go for the 28-300 lense, as you say you already have the 18-55, you don't need another 18mm, and if you get the 70-300 you wont have 55-70, but again, it all depends on useage etc whether you would need/want 55-70 range.

I got a 75-300mm Canon lens for around £150 a couple of years ago. DDtB has the same one. I think it's good but I'm still pretty much a camera n00b.

not sure u guys have seen this site. found most of the lens to be cheaper. (compared to ebay, kelkoo, currys, dixons, argos, amazon...)
cameras seemed to be a little expensive though.

Lenses do look a good price, but memory cards are very expensive.

My lens is there and it's the same price I paid for it so they're not really any cheaper than anywhere else. Currys, Dixons, Argos and Amazon are usually more expensive than everywhere else anyway.

Whilst on the subject of online memory too....

avoid any company linked to.. ANPR(UK) Ltd, such as onlinememory.co.uk, ickle.co.uk, pdaonline.co.uk etc. etc.

They are standard off the shelf e-commerce type sites run by directors who still live at home with mummy (I know this as I spoke to one of the mums last Friday!) and basically they are running a sham of a business with no stock.

Most pricerunner type sites with any positive reviews for them are reviews they have actually posted themselves!!!

Asswipes!
