As far as I am aware Hertz #1 Gold Club is free to join anyway. At least it was when I did it a couple of years ago.

Ah, it may well be that. If it is that's a bonus. I can never find a discount code when I book.
Hertz have always been top notch in the US. I have always had a free upgrade without asking since I became a Gold Club member. No queuing with the rest of the punters and the Hertz prices are never more than £2-£3 (if that) more expensive than the pile em high cattle class companies. They also don't try to scam extra insurance out of you.
