Scottish Elises

This post will no doubt cause an argument, but I just had one of the boys in that does the NDT and he is looking to buy either an Elise, Exige or an Atom. He's just not sure what.

Atom is a million times quicker (going by the figures) but it much more a track car. Not the most practical with no weatherproofing of any kind.

Elise/Exige really just depends if you want a roof and track suspension. More of a 'car' compared to the 4 wheeled superbike that is an Atom - might also be worth pointing out that Atoms are a good bit twitchier, I understand, if he's not used to mid-engined RWD cars.

Seems a bit mad to compare an elise / exige to an atom given that they are so different?

Quite a wide price bracket from Elise to Atom too. Factor in the 11 month waiting list for the Atom. I guess he could buy a early S1 for a year of motoring while he waits the Atom to be delivered.

11 month wait for the Atom currently as Shug says - you also need to be looking at it as a weekend toy.

Elise or Exige would be a far better bet if he hasn't had this sort of car before - having said that always happy for the number of Atoms in Scotland to increase!

Good speaking to you the other day, am back down at J&F tomorrow morning.

I have been up in Aberdeen most of today, ran my mate down to grangemouth then since i had a bit of time to kill i took a wee run over to Murray motors on Edinburgh after Graeme Robertson chasing me up on the phone for ages!

Anyway, after having a quick look at what Graeme had in i think im going to have to bite the bullet and soon.

Currently ive got 2 OLD VW Beetles so im used to rear wheel drive cars!
- '71 with a 1600 turbo engine
- '67 ragtop with a 2276 n/a engine (stripped down and in bits ready to paint and build)
So im used to a bit of power aswell (and much better than most porsches )

I think as some of you have said, the Atom is maybe slightly less practical for Scottish weather, so i might mait til this supposed global warming kicks in bring it on i say

Though id love an atom i think ill pass for now, the idea about buying an early s1 is quite a good one, but to be honest i cannot be arsed having to spend a fortune to fix up a cheaper motor (and have it off the road) ive been doing for the past couple of years .

Possibly if i could pick up a really good s1 relatively cheap then just pile the cash into the bank and fire a deposit down to buy an elise/exige?

on that front, i think if i was going to spend that amount of money id probably go the whole hog and blow a whole in my new wallet to get an exige or even that cup 240 in Murray

what you lot think?

But seriously......
Ive had an s2 elise, s2 exige, s1 exige and now a s1 elise. If i was doing it all again i would go straight for the s1 elise. Its a cheap car that i can rag the life out of and its kind of nice not being that fussed about it. Ive never been the cleaning polishing type!

obviously there is a big performance increase up the range, but in everyday / weekend driving (ie not normally track use etc) am i going to notice that much of a difference?

kinda rhetorical question i guess, open roads ill notice it.

Theres a pretty good guide to the range.

An n/a yota is plenty for road driving and should give you reliability. On track you may want a bit more. Sounds like you like your cars to be sparkling so i would say a newish s2 would be the way forward. If you not going to track it then a 111r maybe the way forward for you as the exige is geared towards the track. If you are free on the 28th then you should come along to knockers to get some pax laps and that should give you a reasonable idea of each cars capabilities. Ive bought new and i would never do that again. Tbh i probably wouldnt buy from a dealer again but you do get piece of mind with regards warranties etc.

may be cutting it fine for the 28th as im away pretty close to then. might have to get my arse in gear and get a bug finished to run over there.
