From Edinburgh I would use the A72/A7/bonchester bridge road/A68 all the way to the A1 (the A696 gets you to the A1 at Newcastle quicker, but terrible queues around Newcastle on A1 sometimes, so you may as well go across the A69 and continue on down through Bishop Auckland and onto the A1).
If it were me, I would stop somewhere fairly far South on or near the A1 rather than the closest travel lodge to North Weald, 'cos it's sh*t and there's no attached pub.
Harlow is pretty near North Weald and has plenty of hotels of various types and should provide somewhere to get some food and a beer or two. Don't have too much though, or you are wasting your money the next day!!
My choice would just be to drive home after the day, but you can obviously pick anywhere to stay on the way home - if you fancy a few beers, you may as well stay near by and go for it ...
Enjoy your day ...
Cheers,
Robin

We took some nice roads on the way to newcastle to pick up scott at Dans. Then the rest of the way was moterway due to one of the cars haveing a few issues. Took us about 9 hours all in with a fair few stops.

Is walshy the guy to go to for handling techniques etc? I had an accident in my previous Elise, in rain conditions, due to inexperience of driving such a car. I would like to gain some experience of how to handle my new Elise, with someone who comes highly recommended and this guy seems to be on here.
If this is the guy to go to for this, can someone pass on some contact details please?
Thanks, Jo

Walshy is a driving God...
Some people say he has a white race suit and a white helmet and appears on some TV show...

All we know is he likes a beer or two

and we call him "Walshy"
