That was me. Off to Insch for an MOT before starting my Duratec conversion.

Ferg. Do NOT be tempted by the Dark Side. The Force has always intended you to use the K Series. Or as Yoda would say, "down the dark path lies the Duratec...give in to your feelings you should not...choose the righteous path, that of the K, for original that one remains, and torquey it can still be, yes".

I'm interested in the tuning potential. The Essex site only says 180, but there must be more ponies in there no?

Sorry for the thread drift Gregor!

A standard out of the box Duratec on TBs gives out 180 but there is plenty more to be had if you add cams and do additional head work etc.

This winter I'll concentrate on getting the engine in and running. 180bhp plus the extra torque will be more than enough to be getting on with. Perhaps the winter after I'll look to go further with the tuning.

A build thread would be great, Gregor.

However, if you have the tech know how, it might be best to host it on a pukka blog, and then just post a note to your thread here to say you've made an update :-) We have enjoyed some build threads here recently but the picture loading times start to make things a bit unwieldy (maybe worse for members on those noofangled mobile device thingies!), so something to think about for sure.

I think you'll be the first Duratec S1 in SE?

As has been already stated and linked to above I've started a build blog on SELOC which is also mirrored on Pistonheads here -

http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topi ... &mid=93093

I've not intentionally shunned SE but I wanted to post to the widest reader base possible. First Duratec in SE, that could be a blessing or a curse. I'm happy to let people have a poke about the car once I am finished.

Sorry Gregor, I need to keep up at the back

Doesn't matter where it's hosted so long as we can read it :-)

thanks

Gregor, couple of questions having read the SELOC blog.

What part of the car is resting on the rear axle stands? I had always understood the jacking/stand points to be on the x-member forward of the fuel tank, and that other areas were too weak? Although isn't there also a subframe point, where a couple of the big undertray bolts attach...is that what you are using?

What mileage and condition is your (ex) K series in, and what do you plan to do with it?

Why would emissions be a worry post-conversion just because they are "tight" with your outgoing K? I'd have thought the Duratec was going to be better, as a more modern engine, and there are no emissions-related components being carried over? (well maybe exhaust, lambda and cat, I suppose?)

Fascinating story so far, though, and a worthwhile read :-)

The pics show the car on the subframe Campbell, marked as D in the manual. http://elise-faq.info/index.php?title=Misc

Re The emissions my MOT testing station seemed to think that my CAT was on its way out. The car failed on emissions dues to a faulty engine temp sensor causing rich running. They suggested that the CAT may have been damaged due to continual rich running. My thoughts are with a bigger engine on TBs it may cause emission problems. Just a thought, I may be wrong.

As for the old K. It's done 58,000 Miles and is in fine fettle. An extensive history came with the car and I see no evidence of it ever suffering HGF. The engine pulls strongly and uses little oil. I very much doubt I'll ever put the K back in so I'll probably try to sell it as a single lump. All the other left over bits will also be sold too.
