Today around 6.30ish in front of me in the KFC drive thru ????

I was in 2 minds to jump out and have a chat but 1. It might not have been you meaning I looked like a weirdo and 2. quiet difficult to do this in the drive thru anyway :D

Already ribbed him about his Institute of Advanced Motorists sticker - I followed him today for a bit - that certainly wasn't advanced!

Advanced tailgating of Mac! ( which I was guilty of too earlier in the day! )

SE sticker, Elise window decal thingy, 2 JPS stickers (Jude Performance Services - Dan who recently serviced my car and fitted my exhaust), and an IAM sticker.

I'm an observer ("instructor") for the IAM, teaching people how to pass their advanced test, so I do try to fly the flag. Rob ain't the first person on here to rip the p!ss out of the IAM sticker :finger . I know the IAM has a crap image, but that's why I've got the sticker on. I'm trying to help get rid of the wheel-shuffling/middle-aged man image the IAM has and the only way I'm going to do that is to try and get younger people like ourselves with cars like ours to join and do the advanced test. So, if anyone is interested, let me know! It's based on the police driving test and manual, Roadcraft. Ain't everyone's cup of tea, but definitely improved my observations and planning on the road.

Rob, I'm happy to take you out for an IAM demo drive sometime. Come and see what it's all about, rather than simply taking the p!ss ;) You might not think it looked advanced, but it's more about where I'm looking and what's going through my head. :thumbsup As for tailgating, I don't remember being so close to Mac at any point today that I couldn't have stopped if he had.

The IAM course is brilliant for elise drivers as it teaches you hazard perception which means we can increase the number of tuts and still see things before the average joe. There was quite a few folk undergoing the training back in SE1 days. I think it's died out because SE1 almost has - but well worth flying the flag again.

As for the "tractor beam" - from where I was sitting (right at the back of the car) it did look like it was engaged, just at a slightly lower power setting than for Rob & Mandy. I'm not so sure you could stop your 800(ish) KG car in the same distance I could bring my 500(ish) car to a stop. :D

I'm only joking mate  - i know what IAM is all about - hazard perception etc, looking beyond the car in front, etc, etc. i think it is a worthwhile thing to do - but I don't really have the time to spare!

I knew you were joking . . . hence the winky faces    :D

Mac, sincere apologies if I was too close at any points. Didn't think I was and I know you can stop a lot faster. :thumbsup I did drop off more as soon as a few stones started to fly in my direction from your tyres!

It's just something to watch with "pack" driving. I was taught to leave more gap than you actually need. One of the reason for this is so that not everybody misses the intended turn off :D

It can be far to easy to turn off slightly and just follow the car in front (hence the term tractor beam). You should drive the road at your pace using your lines which means you require more sighting distance than you do braking distance if you see what I mean.

We split in to two groups anyway - one for the more experienced roadrunners and one for the less. It's a learning curve. I've pretty much sorted out my distances (ref distance I left to Rob) and am working on NOT hitting apexes which I'm inclinded to do coming from more track than road work. Was interesting to see how many folk were cutting the white lines to keep up though

If your wanting some tuition on run ettiquette etc you could do much worse than to invite Zippy along sometime. He's one of the few drivers that can go in any group from the slowest of the slow to the Shug's of this world.

I did start to notice I was tailgating a bit - mainly to get away from Mandy who was pinned to my bumper!

Apologies Mac- And anyone else - I do think everyone (in our group anyway) was a bit close - and if one had misjudged any corner/braking distance - there'd have been glassfibre everywhere!

Something we all need to watch out for in future - I know I will!
Even having someone point it out makes you more aware ( thanks Mandy!)

Speak for yourself :D

It's not a witch hunt - have a read, if you think it applies to you then you can take steps on the next run.

Had anyone been too close to me for my liking I would have applied a little left foot braking on the straights until they got the hint. Didn't need to do that so wasn't overly concerned about distances. Biggest issue is the lemming effect were we end up with 6 elises in a ditch cos the lead one went in

Cool. What group you in? I only started observing at the tail end of last year. My first guy is sitting his test soon. I'm in Glasgow South.
