The model is also in your chassis number. SCC in position 123 is the manufacturer code.

G in pos 4 is the standard 1.8 K-series engine, J if the VVC version.

Cheers for that.

I take it then that the VVC is just another version of the Rover engine or is this something used on the Toyota version too. I'm learning a lot quite quickly here!

VVC was a version of the Rover K series with Variable Valve Control. Not as complex as the Toyota system, but still very clever - it adjusts the inlet valve timing. Basically means you can get good power out of it without sacrificing low-down torque. Just not as much power as the more complex systems like VVTLi and VTEC that alter valve lift as well - although the plus is that there is no 'switchover' point in the revs.

I have one on throttle bodies and I love it to bits. Like everyone is saying though - whatever engine, you'll love it - 120bhp is plenty in such a light car and it's not tough to add a few when the time comes that you might want to.

Check out the Anoraks on this thread, jeez! Even Tut!!

Welcome aboard Wilko. If you have exhaust exits either side of the plate, then as you say it's a Rover engine in there. In 2004, unless it was badged 111S, then it's a std 120bhp K series with Lotus K4 engine management. I seem to recall Lotus tried to sex up the std Elise when the 111S was introduced, calling it, helpfully, the S. I think the S was then soon dropped, the 111R came in (with Toyota clever cams and 190bhp), the 111S remained as "entry level" for a while, then it was canned an the new "S" arrived with Toyota power but only 134bhp because no fancy cams.

Summat like that anyway.

Will it tell me on the v5? I do know on the rear bumper it says Elise S
If the rear says Elise S than that is probably what you have. S is the basic rover engined model for a 2004 with twin tail pipes which has 120 bhp and so its not a 111s which has 156 bhp.
I have since sold mine but here is a link to my sales thread which has a pic of the engine bay

http://www.scottishelises.com/phpbb/vie ... =7&t=26703

See the big shiny silver bit in front middle? Betcha yours is black plastic so it's a 120bhp S. If silver like mine then it's a 111s. Ignore the sliver bean can to the left as that's an extra/upgraded induction kit.

Other things are the 111s has stickers saying such above the side repeaters and also on the rear screen.

As others have said, you'll love it whatever it has in the engine bay.

Cheers.

Some model stats based on road tax/sorn figures (some of the data may be a bit ropey depending on whether the car was registered as the correct model.)

Sounds to me like you have a 120bhp k series S . They arrived in late 2003 and were available for about a year - basically a standard engined car with improved trim ( leather, soundproofing, central locking, leccy windows)

Which is what Woody said Stuart had -
woody wrote:There was a k series Elise S with 120 bhp available in 2004.

Start Mathieson had one in Purple; it had S stickers on each front wing, 120 K (rover engine) and the 6 spoke wheels but the spec of the 111s with leather and electric windows etc... Don't think they made that spec for long.
-which I got new in Sept 2003 and Stuart bought when I traded it for a 111R

Thank you all so much, I've learned loads!
Picked the car up yesterday n got it home to find I've stuck a nail in a tyre, what a barsteward! Gotta guy gonna try n repair the puncture tomorrow, if not the tyre is a right barsteward to get hold of! Luckily a slow puncture so hasn't kept me grounded.
The car though, WOW I love it. Shame about the rain all day today!

Unlucky about the tyre but glad you are enjoying the car

I do not know which make of tyres that you have but the Yoko A048 impressed me on the my previous 111R. Have a chat to Criag @ MMC as he gives a good discount for Scotish Elise owners (obviously helps if you are close by to Edinburgh though but he may be able to send them up to a Murray's Dealership close by?)

Cheers

if it is an 111s on standard exhaust it has a valve in one tail pipe so it works on one exit pipe on idle, also 111s goes noticably quicker at top end, still like S! better and i have had them all nearly.
