Definately the Elise.
not totally decided on S1 or S2 but drawn to the grills and the lamps on the S2.
Price bracket £8,000.00 to £12,000.00 (which puts me in the late S1 or early S2 catagory)#
Definately road only..... for now. will play Gran Turisimo for my track kicks.

Test drive lots. Don't have the money ready (cos you'll probably want to but the first one - I did  ) but go and get drives in as many as you can. You could have a very tidy S1 for that money, or like you say, an early S2. They do feel a bit different - it's very much personal choice whether you prefer the more raw feel of an S1, or the (slightly) more civilised S2. Nobody can tell you which one is for you, as much as they'll try :)

(Get an S1, by the way - modern classic 8) )

But with S2 suspension...

Sounds to me like you should have a look a sport 160 again if you can find one. Ok, so the engine tune is far from perfect and in the real world thay are not any faster than most other standard elises, but I love the offbeat Idle, the slightly more aggresive than a standard S1 looks and it's nice to have something thats fairly rare.

Woody's got a great point there, the racer feel and genuine rarity value of the S160 makes it pretty exciting. And there's also a great example of the honesty of this group...in factory spec, the S160 doesn't really deliver its full potential. However we have the brains and the technology here to sort that out for you ;-)

And if you do get an S1, the S2 suspension mod is a must...again, more on that here later when you are ready :-)

great info guys. What ever I do over the next couple of months I'm pretty certain there are people out here who I can ask help from. I will return the favour one day for someone else. In the meantime any dog trouble drop me a line. 10 years police dogs 12 guide dogs.

There will prob be orange motorsport arrows to the venue too. If not, the entrance is at the North end of Mary St, on the RHS as you head away from Johnston town centre. :thumbsup

Hi SE.
I took my time but having read as much as I could find online and after many hours of checking and re-checking auto tader and pistion heads I have made a descision.

OK here goes. S2 Sports Tourer 2001-02 £10,000-£12500.

Any owners out there who can help me with what to look for. Will be off round the UK in April trying to get the best deal I can. Would totally appreciate any advice there is on the subject from S2 ST owners or any other interested party.

We've got a 2001 Race Tech which is a similar car. Your will have full leather seats (ours is half and half) and a 4 speaker stereo.

These early cars are now being recognised as the best S2's as they are pre yankification and don't have central locking, electric windows, sunvisors, ABS, traction control, airbag and other heavy stuff.

At that age you would be asking about the service history - if it's not a main dealer that's not a huge issue but I would be looking for invoices as the ball joints, track rod ends and perhaps wheel bearing will start to get tired very soon if they haven't been replaced already.

Check that the heater work and can be moved from hot to cold (PS hot is a serious misnomer but I think "luke warm if your lucky" was to much to write), that it blows and that both side windows work both up and down (a small screw dislocates which causes them to stick - an easy fix but be aware of it). Other than that make sure that the engine cooling fan kicks in at around 102c and doesn't sound like someone's emptied a bag of marbels in the washing machine.

I'm sure with a bit of notice there will be some folk from here that will pop along with you to see any potential cars.

Thanx for this Mac,
The spec was something I knew about but it is the "not includeds" which are helpful. Central locking isnt an issue if i can reach all the doors from the drivers seat and I could do with the exsercise putting windows up and down. I will definately be back in touch closer the time.

thx for the heads up on Briggy's race tech. I hadnt looked at them as I am more of a cruise past the shop window sort of guy rather than a speed demon. Will have look and maybe I can be the one tucking Sophie in at night.

Don't be fooled by the terms "Race Tech" vs "Sports Tourer". The fundamental capabilities of the cars are identical, these are really just "trim levels", if you can be as complimentary as that, and they are more fashion statement than substance.

An S2 with the earliest foibles sorted is a cracking entry to Elise ownership and it is a step up in refinement from S1 whatever variant you pick.

Have fun browsing!

Grame at MMC is very generous with test drives, (it's how he sells so many) - I would thoroughly recommend a visit to Edinburgh when he has something you are interested in in stock. Probably best to call first to check availability for a drive.

I'm not suggesting buying from him necessarily, but it is a great place to look and drive guilt free - just take some will power with you as he is a good salesman...

If you going to do what Pete suggested, can you do a few things for us poor SE'rs on here.

1. Tell us when your going over (so that we can be over there)
2. Take one of the trainee pups over with you.

As Pete said, Graeme is a very good salesman and a great bloke to boot, but I would love to see him struggling with the moral dilema of "do I sell an elise to a bloke with a guide dog"

I'm guessing he probably will :D
