I thought the head gasket problem only applied to the Rover engine? Surely the Toyota engine doesn't have the same problem? Toyota engines usually last forever.
Good tips about the lights . . . especially with my Elise being the same colour as the road!

Welcome along dude...
Don't believe any hype about engines never having problems - death & taxes, my friend
That said - the Toyota lump is a league ahead of the Rover in terms of quality (and yeah, the HGF is a Rover thing). Don't worry about it - expect little niggles and you'll get on fine with Elise ownership.
The 111R is no widowmaker either - just don't think you are Schumacher from the get go (it doesn't drive itself, unlike a lot of jap rally missiles) and stay alert of road conditions (the elise is light and relies on tyre grip more than most cars - no weight to hold it down)
111R is a lot more forgiving than earlier S1's though - ABS, that bit of extra weight and the torque delivery all help to make it less twitchy and more thrashable from the start.
Above all - enjoy it and get along to some meets. 50% of the fun of an Elise is the nutters you end up meeting, who gravitate towards it
