Possible newbie with some questions

Post by garyshoose » Mon Oct 19, 2009 1:07 pm

Hi, Guys.

Been having a wee nosey around coz I'm thinking about switching cars. I've been building classic minis for a few years and engine swaps for the last three. I've got a wee Vtec mini pickup just now (rollered at 175 at the weekend :D ) Generally, I've been messing about with older cars for the last twenty-odd years and getting a bit fed up with chasing rust really. I like something a wee bit different so maybe an elise? Forum looks nice n freindly too which i like. I'm on a couple of bike ones (got a fireblade), but too many rude bumz on there. Would some of you mind answering a few questions for me please. I've never been in, let alone driven, an Elise so not sure if I'll like them........

1. It should be quick!
2. How is the handling?
3. Generally how are they constructed and from what materials.
4. What's insurance like (I'm 40 BTW and it can be on limited milage as it'll be an occasional car). Having said that, I had a Classic mini with a 208bhp vauxhall redtop in it last year and the bike never turned a wheel all summer. (could be a bike for sale soon  )
5. Are there any garages other than official lotus guys who maintain them or is that a no-no?
7. When did they stop using the K series ?
6. If i think of any more I'll add them later...............

Oh, and don't suppose anyone wants a swap for a classic mini pickup

Gary.

Hi Gary welcome to Scottish_Elises, sounds as if you are an enthusiast.

Reference 4) you should have no problem at your age with any model. I have a S/C Honda Elise, 69, FNCB, 11 points and that is only £300 for 10K miles and four trackday's cover.

1. It is quick compared to other cars on the road and it's very quick compared to other cars on the track
2. Hard to beat
3. As above. As with all hand built cars expect rattles, buzzes and all other noises you can think of but they seem to hold up pretty well.
4. As above group 20 - but shouldn't be too expensive given age etc.
5. SLS (Specialists - Edinburgh) JPS (Specialist - Newcastle) and MMC (Main Dealer - Edinburgh).
6. 2004/2005. Toyota 111R and Exige came out to replace it along with a Toyota Elise S after (the S does not stand for supercharged unfortuntaly).

I don't know driving in another way which isn't risky. Each one has to improve himself. Each driver has its limit. My limit is a little bit further than other's.

Well wot d'ya know... I actually work in loanhead about a stone throw from SLS. Live in Houston and have another house in the Scottish Borders, where insurance is half the price :thumbsup

Thanks for all the kind welcome's guys. I especially like the Aluminium & GRP answer (no more tin worm, wooo-hoooo !) Just need to get my truck cleaned up and get it up for sale. Last one i sold got enquiries from as far afield as Texas  so should manage to get it sold ok. I've got all the original parts to return it to standard A-series for the purists if i have to.
Momo, I dont really want to stick a pic of my truck up. Kinda embarrassing since it's an Elise site, but if you twist my arm hard enough, I might :)

Couple more question I'm afraid....

1. Do they use the drive shafts from the MGF and if so, is a lot of the drivetrain interchangable?
2. Is the ECU programmable?

:cheers
