First car First Lotus First post

Post by KevD » Fri May 07, 2010 9:20 pm

Hello,

Been lurking on these boards for a while but thought I'd post after seeing a few other elise drivers while I've been out and about lately.

Bought my first ever car, series 1 elise (1999V) in early feb, been loving it. Previously jsut used the better half's car/hire cars for work/public transport.

Had the joys of getting used to non assisted brakes, learnt the importance of having tyres which match and generally scared the crap out of most people I've given a lift to - most of the times it's been deliberate!

Things I've learned:

Motorways are loud, I need to pinch some earplugs next time I'm shooting.
The hardtop is good but driving the car with the hood off changes it for the better.
90% of people like it, 10% will be jealous
Petite ladies can't reach the pedals ( no bad thing)

Still getting used to the car, racked up about 1400 miles on it now but I'm still taking it easy, I'm probably the slowest elise driver round corners but love the acceleration which doesn't require as much skill. Will sort out some driver training soon and hoping to do a mid life refurb next year.

Anyway, hopefully there's a pic on this posting or its going to be well boring. If anyone see's me around hamilton/glasgow give us a wave. I've had to give up pub nights to pay for bills so you won't see me that much!

I don't know driving in another way which isn't risky. Each one has to improve himself. Each driver has its limit. My limit is a little bit further than other's.

Thanks, lurked on here since before I bought it picking up tips and tricks. A lot of the advice given to other people definately helped.

I need to get a driver upgrade before I do a trackday!

I bought it on ebay... unseen.... having never driven a series 1 ( and only done one little experience day in a series 2)

I had looked about a fair bit though and knew what to watch for and got lucky. It's got two tone leather interior which is cream/blue ( looks better than it sounds) and is generally in great condition.

Since I've bought it I got the A service done at SLS, fitted a new tyre to match the existing Toyo proxes and got all wheels balanced ( miles better) and I've fitted a series 2 wiper arm with washer spray integrated into the wiper - that was a pain in the arse to fit but well worth it.

Kev and Ferg, as everybody will tell you, the best place to learn to drive your car is on the track. One of the best times to start out would be with us all on tuttowers 2010 in June, as you will get to meet everybody there, and almost every car on track will be one of our Lotus's.

Both my teenage kids drove my Elise for the first time at KH, not ready for the road yet, never mind insurance, and thoroughly enjoyed themselves in a safe enviremont, and that in a LHD S/C Honda. Don't be nervous about going out for the first time, we all had to do it at one stage, you will not be holding anyone up, and you would have an experienced driver with you to show you the ropes and keep you safe.

Plus I will also have an Instructor for you FOC, which you would have to pay a fair amount for if you arranged it yourselves. This also applies to all the other Newbie virgins that have joined us recently, if you are thinking of tracking your car, and once you start you will not want to stop, then this would be an ideal opportunity.
