At last iv found an S1,advice needed..

I have been looking for an Elise S1 for ages,as a replacement for my Focus ST,and i eventually found one,and i already love it. I read the forums and had help from mates who are a member of this club,so thanks for all the insider knowledge..
I will be upgrading several parts,so will doubtless need more advice in the coming months.
I do have to ask just now,how much work is involved in upgrading to a removeable steering wheel?
I have average knowledge of cars,have serviced my past cars for a while now,is it do-able by myself?

It's pretty easy to do, provided you can get the wheel off.

Pop out the horn button and you'll see a big nut; unscrew that with suitable socket and ratchet, then wind it back on a good few turns.

Now you've got to shock the old wheel off. Sometimes they just pull off with a bit of force, sometimes they need more violence. http://www.eliseparts.com sells a steering wheel puller which is little more than a flat bar with a suitable nut welded to it and a bolt to tighten it up and pop the wheel off. Once the wheel is loose on the splines, undo the nut the rest of the way and replace steering wheel with the removable boss as per instructions that come with the wheel.

Note that you'll need one designed for the Elise to make sure the splines are right and that it takes the horn wiring.

I've only ever come across one wheel I couldn't wrench off with muscle power alone

Hi Jay welcome aboard SE mate! You don't need a removable wheel fella, mine is never off pal... Just enjoy her and spend some time getting to know her, track is a great place to get to know her better and learn her characteristics. Cheers bro

N3 had one on when I bought it, but it has never been off.

However I prefer it to the standard one, slightly smaller, a little thicker, and with good thumb rests.

I wouldn't worry about though, when you park on a sunny day, you probably won't even put the roof back on never mind remove the steering wheel
