Hello from a prospective owner

Post by hcessford » Mon Jan 24, 2011 11:22 pm

Hello all,

Although not (yet) an Elise owner, I thought I'd introduce myself and hopefully also benefit from the multitude of experience here! Like many others, I'm Aberdeen based; although with a rallying rather than track background I don't think I know anyone here. The plan had been to wait until the weather improved before purchasing but I spotted an 111R at George Mackay in Edinburgh and got itchy feet!

Finally, does anyone recognise this Elise and/or have any thoughts on it? http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/2201598.htm Alternatively, I'm open to other suggestions...

Regards,
Hannah

I dont know the car but 3 wee points to note:
Its not winter tyres on it as far as I can see.
I'm not sure it can have rear electric windows.
The plate reads as GURN which means 'screw your face up'.

Saying that a 111R should be lovely and the tyres that are on it would be better than winter ones anyway. I'm sure better folks will be along to add more substance. Best of luck with the hunt.

Gav.

Hi Hannah,
Welcome!

That's an odd advert. Looks a nice enough car... There is an Elise buying guide somewhere on here as a sticky. I'm on iPhone so can't be bothered finding it! ;)

At that age there will be a number of things needing checked/ replaced, so I'd query history and documentation, who has been servicing it etc.

Not sure how much you know about different elise models, but there is a good reference website explaining models... Elises.co.uk ... I think!

I recognised your name but had to google you! :). You'll be most welcome here. I think we have a couple of rally drivers and ex rally drivers, auto testers, lotus racers, track whores, hill climbers, sprinters...

Car you posted link too looks good - alloys look like Exige rims and as Gav said the tyres in the ad aren't winter tyres either.

Hannah,

Welcome to Scottish Elise's. I am sure that I have seen that car around Edinburgh but don't know the owner of whether he/she is on Scottish Elise's. Sure Graeme (our ex Murray's Lotus Sales man) may well know the car and sure he will post up if he does.

The car is made to look a Sports Racers (http://uk.cars.yahoo.com/car-reviews/ca ... 04918.html) but I do not think it is as it does not appear to have the correct wheels/door mirrors on it (although curious as to what the sticker says above the side indicator. Sure someone will correct me if I am wrong.

Cheers

:welcome from an occasional motor-sportist.

Waiting to buy till the weather gets better is likely to mean higher prices - you may be able to get a bit of a deal on one at the moment.

Advice; try a few before you buy. :thumbsup

Looks pretty tidy - echo the comments about winter tyres, perhaps he meant that they're road tyres instead of semi-slicks - they look like pretty fresh factory spec Yoko Advans in the pics. Fair price from a trader, deffo worth at very least a test drive.

If you are popping down for a test drive you may as well pop into Murray's as they have a 111R with a bit more miles (and higher price) but at least it will give you a back to back comparison. http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/sales/2279722.htm

Unfortunately with Graeme gone recently I do not know how clued up the current salesman is on Lotus cars.

There is also one in Glasgow that has an MMC sticker on the back http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/sales/2244608.htm.

The one in George MacKay look the best aesthetically though.

Hi Hannah,

The silver 111R at Murray's was mine previously, had the car for a year before moving on to the Exige. Not one bit of trouble during a most enjoyable year. A great wee car.

I'm sure you'll love a 111R which ever one you end up with.

All the best

Thank you for all the comments - it's reassuring to see my queries from the advert mirrored. The tyres shown definitely aren't what I would class as winter tyres!

Those are Exige alloys on with A048s - not original, suggesting there is maybe another set of 111R alloys with "winter" tyres on (perhaps just a set of RE040s or AD07s) - worth a check.

I enjoyed my 111R - looks like the Exiges wheels give you wider fronts, so worth a wee drive to check it is sweet (and compare with the MMC version).

As ever - thorough check recommended :thumbsup

I don't know driving in another way which isn't risky. Each one has to improve himself. Each driver has its limit. My limit is a little bit further than other's.
