Just joined-no lotus for now

Post by TerryCTR » Mon May 09, 2011 10:21 pm

Alright,

Currently driving an rx8 r3 as I was too impatient to wait for the right exige 240pp to appear. This turned out to be a big mistake as the value of my car has taken a hammering.

I plan to get a starlight black RGB next but I'll see what happens to the prices in the next year

Anyone near Glasgow care to give me a pax ride in any variation of exige s as I've yet to have a run out in one, Murray lotus never have any demos when I have been up

Cheers

Terry

Hi Terry, welcome!

As you no doubt know, the Exige prices have held up very well, which is making your swap from RX8 to Exige harder by the day I suspect; I cannot see Exige prices falling whilst RX8 prices level out, unfortunately, so the gap will keep getting bigger :-(

For example, I bought an Exige 240 around this time last with ~7K on the clock. The same car sold for a little more than I paid for it this month, with an extra 4K miles. Allowing for the fact that I bought privately but sold through a dealer, I would guess that the true depreciation over the year was around 1K.

However, stick with it because I'm sure your opportunity will come along! Have you thought about buying an older Elise first and then trading up to an Exige later - might make it a bit more affordable whilst giving you a lot of the fun? The Exige is great on track but on the road there is really nothing in it between most of the Elise derivatives - they'll all go much faster on twisty roads than a sane person would ever drive them, so it doesn't make much difference how much more power they have.

Cheers,
Robin

Yeah I know mate at this point I'm losing my 6k deposit on the Rex so I have to keep it a bit longer.

I like the more aggressive look of the exige and for me it has to be a 240PP minimum, I need the ap brakes.

I think they will continue to hold value too but I do wonder what effect the supposed v6 engine will have

Thanks for the welcome

They all have AP brakes, of course, just some bigger than others ;-)

I've owned many of the Elise variants over the last 10 years and I can say without doubt that the best brakes are to be found on pre-servo K-series cars. Fit decent pads and they have more stopping power than you can reasonably use. The newer Exige/Elise win in the sense that they have good ABS, which might keep you out of the hedges when the older car would have let you outbrake yourself and then just laughed at you :-)

Of course this is just practical stuff - aesthetically the Exige with big brakes looks the dogs bollocks, so if that's what you're looking for, go for it!

Given that the Exige is no longer manufactured, even when/if the new engine model finds its way to market, I doubt it will have a strong impact on the Exige residuals (just try and buy an S1 Exige in original specification .... ouch!).

Cheers,
Robin

Yeah S1's are going for crazy prices. I know I probably don't actually need them but the looks do it for me along with the proper extended scoop on the 240. Being me I know I will modify down the line so I may as well get the brakes etc to begin with.

I saw an rgb on the road the other week and now I must have one :D

A couple of us on here have had RX8's... it's a decent 'compromise' car if you need 4 seats. Thankfully though, I bought 2nd hand & actually made £1500 when I sold it a year later :D
I could well imagine how hard the hit would be on an R3 if you bought new
Good luck with your hunt for the perfect Exige :thumbsup

Cheers everyone.

I did buy new unfortunately and I'm paying now. It is a good car but I've always wanted an exige and it's and itch I need to scratch.

Good luck with the search.
If you like to modify i would look at the limitations and price of uprating the toyota's gearbox before making your decision.
Its what put me off going for big BHP with mine.

Also try an Elise too :thumbsup

Thanks,

I think I'll be happy with a 2ubular manifold and exhaust and trd airbox. Depending on the suspension as stock I'd maybe go for nitrons down the line.

I guess I better get myself a car first before I worry about this
