Which Oil?

Post by pete » Tue Jul 03, 2007 2:28 pm

I'm sure it's been asked before but I've always used fully synthetic but Falkland are recommending semi as he reckons fully is too thin and the top end gets noisy.

Discuss?

Silkolene Pros 5w 40 synthetic works for me and the top end is much quieter than whatever rubbish was in mine when I first got it.

Surely the thickness depends on the grade of oil you are using not the type.

Oilman on SELOC comes up with some good info though he is running a buisness. http://forums.seloc.org/viewthread.php? ... pid2753715

Use what the engine maker recommends and not some spanner monkey.

If they feel it's too thin put the 15W50 motorsport fully synth (like the stuff I gave you) in it. That makes it noisier when cold, but quietens down when hot. Total overkill for a standard engine though. Silkolene (previously mentioned) gets good reviews from everyone I know who uses it.

And why would semi be thicker than fully?

I would think they recommend it because its cheaper so they can make their servicing prices more competitive.

I recommend (and use) Silkolene Pro S 5w-40 for most cars and Silkolene Pro R 15w-50 for cars that do a lot of track work without oil coolers.

Honda'd cars, Pro R 15w-50 for cars running standard Honda oil cooler and Pro S 5w-40 for cars running large laminova cooler.

I also use Silkolene Pro R 15/50, for "normal" cars I use the much cheaper XTR 10W40.

ps. Both available in the CE shop, link below

You've got to treat your kite like you treat your woman.

What do you mean sir? Take her home at the weekend to meet your mother?

No, get inside her 5 times a day and take her to heaven and back!
