The EU3 does have a wee water-to-oil cooler IIRC and it's fitted to the rear side of the engine (i.e. under the intake manifold). It also has an electric coolant pump designed to keep the coolant flowing through the radiator after you switch off the engine to help get rid of heat in the oil. Of course the heat exchanger will also help heat the oil when it's cold.
Only ever seen it once, mind you, and wasn't paying much attention (was on a smashed elise), so could be totally wrong.
Cheers,
Robin

That sounds similar to what Lee described to me today Robin (Alan's question may not be completely unconnected from mine - it was he who kindly collected quite a lot of the oil from my car that would have otherwise be-spoiled the Highlands. I had to squeegee it off his car to get it back mind.).robin wrote:The EU3 does have a wee water-to-oil cooler IIRC and it's fitted to the rear side of the engine (i.e. under the intake manifold). Didn't know about the electric pump though.

Thanks for that , I will have a look tomorrow out of curiosity . Its was Pete's problem that made me ask as I didn't know where he was talking about .
Pete, your mission should you choose to accept it is to find out where it was leaking from and get pics

Could not wait till tomorrow.
There are two oil hoses coming from the cooler ( which I never knew was there ) going down towards the oil pump below the cam belt area. Must have been one of the hose fittings that was corroded.

It does indeed have an oil cooler.
Had a related problem when I first got the car.
The metal pipes that run to/from the cooler had corroded at the point where a little bracket clamps them onto the engine, leading to oil being sprayed out the back of the car when I drove.
Thought it would be a relatively straightforward fix for my local garage. Only problem was he couldn't get one of the pipes off the cooler.
Turned out the connection had been cross threaded, and resulted in a new cooler having to be fitted as well.

Pictures of the oil pipe are here. I'm afraid I'm not clever like what Alan is so I can't include them in the post
The corrsion is clearly visible in one and the whole pipes are visible in one...
Pete
(Gasp at the beauty of those pipes though. That's 140UKPs worth.)

I think Lotus started putting the W/O coolers on the VVC's some four or five years ago.
Funny btw as at that time we were doing a water/oil cooler bulkbuy (which turned out to be massive) at Seloc. One of the things I kept repeating was "A VVC engine which is seriously tracked needs a W/O cooler!"
A couple of months later, I had a look at a new S2 and saw the W/O cooler.
...still think it's the best solution to keep a K-series healthy!

* A Pedant writes. From previous experience Pete isn't it more likely that it is user ineptitude to blame rather than "The computer/website is just stupid"?
Errrm yes.
