So following my recent oil leak I've dropped teh rear diffuser as tehre is still a bit of a smell of oil and some bit of my mechanical gubbins on teh drivers side at the back do have a liberal sprinkling of oil on them.

Is it a bad idea to wipe it all down with a petrol soaked rag to clean it off?

(I've got that horrible feeling it is a stupid question).

I see no reason why not , other than it smells really bad and is highly flamable. Dont splosh it over the cambelt area as I have a feeling belts dont like it .

A rag with a spray of WD40 cleans up aluminium really well .

I use AutoGimps Wheel Cleaner and a stiff brush.

Petrol is pretty nasty stuff. It strips the oil from your skin much faster than that from your car. You can get contact dermatitise from getting it on your paws.

It does work for washing down metalwork but you need to wear solvent resistant gloves. Marigolds will melt, been there. Lots of plastics are soluble in it as well, so caw canny.

For something as effective but designed for the job, use an engine cleaner. Gunk or Halfords equivalent. They contain strong detergents. Or for much cheapness, Fairy Liquid and a stiff brush will work on all but the most burnt on oil/grease. (great for taking oil of the drive and saving a roastting from the other half)
