Headlight bulb replacement

Post by dezzy » Sat Jul 21, 2007 1:08 am

Just noticed my offside dipped headlight bulb has gone tonight. I guess I can just get the standard 55W bulbs from Halfrauds and I've had a look at the instructions for replacement and it looks fairly simple (if a bit of a PITA having to take the wheel off! ) but is there anything I need to know or watch out for?

If I'm just sticking a new bulb in, do I need to worry about alignment? The manual mentions something about a special tool . . . but can I just assume the alignment will stay the same if I stick the new bulb straight in? I guess I could just use the lights shining on the garage door?

Another thing to add to the list for my mini spanners session on Tuesday. Guess I'll maybe replace my cracked headlight cover at last while I'm doing this, although it is the other side, so we'll see if I can be bothered!

Cheers,

Btw when I had my headlight units off I tried to clean some of the dust and rodents out.

Learned that the mirror coating comes off if you even look at it the wrong way

Shouldn't be an issue if you're just doing a straight bulb swap...

It was a doddle :thumbsup

It's a slight PITA that you have to take the wheel and arch liner out though. There's no way you could have got to it on my car without doing that.

So, the steps are:

Jack up, wheel off.
Remove front section of arch liner.
Undo 3 allen bolts.
Slide headlight cover off.
Unclip connector for bulb, unfasten metal clip and pull bulb out (I found this a bit fiddly with fingers, so used a pair or long nose pliers to assist.
Pop new bulb in, being careful not to touch the glass bit of it.
Reverse the first few steps.

Pretty simply job, just overcomplicated slightly by having to take wheel and arch liner off.

If yours is an 02 plate- I'm pretty sure your wheelarch liner stays on - It's just 3 bolts/screws that hold the headlight cover on.
