The Porker Saga continues... (TFALC)

Post by Rich H » Tue Jul 24, 2007 9:57 am

Morning all, the porker saga continues in the other thread, but I have a question for the more experienced mechanical types:

I have to pull out a bearing or the bearing housing. Problem is the bearing (Approx 25mm across) has totally collapsed to the point of being nothing more than an outer race pressed into the housing. Unfortunately there is now nothing to grip with a puller and I need to change it. Bearing is £8 housing is £60 so clearly I want to save the housing if possible. If I can get it out it'll be about 10 mins work for someone with a lathe to cut the outer race out.

There is a M12x1.5 threaded hole down the centre of the end of the housing for extraction, but I can't find a decent way of pulling it out. If I try and just push it out with a bolt it just bottoms out and then stops, I don't know if the hole goes all the way though and I don't want to strip the thread...

I have ordered a pickle fork type ball joint splitter for a couple of quid and I was thinking of just fitting that and giving it a whack, but does anyone have any better (ie: less violent) suggestion?

Cheers
Rich

It's been suggested I pack the hole with grease then screw the bolt in. Forgot that trick. I'll have a crack.

Anyone got any other suggestions?
