How do I get the top off my viper??

Post by gorrie » Fri Aug 03, 2007 5:24 pm

Totally stupid question but does it just prize off/pull off? I've been twisting the small side (the incoming dirty air side) but it's just rotating round rather than coming off. Don't want to break it or crack the carbon fibre case by prizing it with a flat-head screw driver.

I need to clean the element tonight... well in fact, considering I've only done 2K miles in 6mths it looks like it needed cleaned the minute I picked the car up.

Removed the clean air side and thought, "great, pretty clean... must be doing it's job fine"

Removed the dirty air side and thought, "bugger me, has this ever been cleaned in it's life!!"

I had a PiperX open cone on a previous car... never cleaned it in 3.5yrs/60K and it still looked clean. I guess an enclosed filter is gonna get dirtier, but this is just caked thick with mud-like stuff.

Maybe a clean will free up a couple of horses.... if I can get in to the element!!

Yep, that was me. Was looking for a new matress in Reids/Bed Shed/MFI etc etc.... but I've come away even more confused... Memory/Orthopedic/Cushion Top/blah, blah blah, and then I find out there are different ones specifically for slatted beds rather than divans !!

JUST GAE ME A MATRESS COZ MINES IS CRAP !! Back to square one again on that.

I had the same problem on the S1's viper (and couldn't get a conclusive answer) in the end I just pulled the foam out through the big end - it was still attached to the filter but enough came through to vaccum off the worst of the crap and give it a bit of a wash and oil.

It looks like its not meant to come to bits. From their website
Even Pipercross filters need occasional cleaning to be kept in peak condition - full filter service kits are now available in two convenient sized aerosols enabling you to both thoroughly clean and re-oil the filter.
See the Accessories page on the website for full descriptions and part numbers.

To clean your filter:

Remove excess dirt by gently brushing the filter
Apply cleaning additive liberally.
Massage in with soft brush, allow to soak in for around 5 minutes
Flush the filter out with warm water from the clean side of the foam to the dirty side.
Allow the filter to dry naturally (do not apply any heat to the filter!)
Lightly apply dirt retention additive on the dirty (black) side of the foam.
Steps 2-4 may need to be repeated until the filter is clean. Do not over oil the foam as this will impair performance.

Cheers peeps... I managed to get the top silver bit off and concur that the filter element itself is fixed. There is a rubber seal that is bonded to the foam filter and the carbon fibre case, so without breaking the seal the filter does not come out. Just assumed it would be removable for cleaning as I'm sure the ITG/BMC ones are.

Mac, I thought about pulling it through also... but with the small silver part off, it was then fairly easy to clean by dumping it in a sink of warm water and massaging by hand.

All clean now, but will probably take ages to dry. Should probably get some filter oil... I might still have some from my old PiperX open cone actually

Cheers, Andy

/Off to rummage the garage for oil faction.
