Is this bolt important?

Post by gorrie » Sat Aug 04, 2007 7:45 pm

2 bolts behind the seats up high. 1 behind driver & 1 behind passenger. It looks like perhaps they are meant to hold the roof bar in... maybe.

Passenger side:-

Driver side (no-bolt and surround is cracked):-

I've noticed a bit of creaking from somewhere behind the driver seat... so maybe the lack of this bolt is to blame?
So, are these just holding the roof bar on or do they serve another purpose?
If they are holding the bar in place, does this mean mines is in danger of coming off with just 1 bolt remaining?

Cheers, as always... Andy.

These bolts only hold on the top bit of plastic over the screen - nothing structural. They are IIRC M8s if you wish to replace.

The cover is also held on by the two bolts in the cant rail latches (the thing the roof clips into) and also I think that there are two further bolts in the butresses coming up from underneath (you would need to remove wheel arch liners to see these two).

So nothing will fall off, but maybe something will squeak worse with this bolt out (then again, it might squeak worse with the bolt in :-)).

Cheers,
Robin

cheers Robin... I'll get another bolt in there anyway. Might need to create a washer with a flat side to spread the load past where it's cracked.

It's not M8 BTW - best wind out the other bolt and take it with you when you go to buy a replacement.
