Interior Fan Prob - Another 2x150 miles to MMC then...

Post by Bada Bing! » Tue Aug 28, 2007 12:51 pm

The other day the fan conked out complately and stopped working for 2 days until the weather dried up. The air con was still working fine, there was just no fan to blow the cold air at me or the windscreen. :D

It's worked fine since then. Now it's starting to smell real bad when I turn it on, like burnt celery/plastic/copper.

Anywhere obvious I can open and check what's going on without heading away out to MMC?

No

Sealed unit that MMC will tell you needs replaced.

They also drill a hole in the bottom of the new fan casing to drain any water (apparently on advice from lotus)

The burning smell will stop when the fan gives up (ie next few days)

Also MMC will charge an arm and a leg for the unit and fitting.................as per.....

Unless you are warrenty covered, that is...

Yep, under warranty until December. I'll give them a call then and see what can be done. It's a complete pain in the arse when I have to go there.

I only do 9 miles a day, so I'm doing almost a month's worth of miles on the car every time it has to go back to them. :x

My fan gave up recently, I've got a new one on back order from Lotus (via MMC). Clam-off job to replace apparently, just as well it's under warranty

Hi

it sounds to me like it could be the resistor pack at the bottom of the blower motor that might have packed up.

This can be quite a common issue, and does come up from time to time.

I'm out on the road the week of the 10th September if you want me to take a look at it for you? If I can help give me a shout, 0796 1445483, fine even if you just want a quick chat about it :D

If it aint under warranty it costs c£650 (though the motor is around £85) - labour for clam off. Also, if under warranty new designed (hole drilled) fan unit will be fitted.
There's a www somewhere that sell the resistor pack if not under warranty.

IIRC the resistor pack and fan unit are combined and sealed. Can the resistors be replaced on their own? And if so, why do MMC state that a whole new fan unit is needed (as if I need to ask!)

IIRC you can change the resistor pack if you are willing to take it all to bits, but Lotus do not supply the resistor pack so dealers must change the next higher assembly at vast cost to the customer

Thanks for the call Ali. I've got to drive 150 miles and back to Murray's to get a diagnosis and confirm it's the resistor pack, then have to do another 150 miles at a later date once the parts come in. :x

I'd honestly rather leave the car with them until it's fixed as I really grudge the time and mileage spent going backwards and forwards all the time.

They did say that several S2's have blown their fans up and it's been the resistor pack each time, but they're on back order so don't have stock anyway.

If they kept the Glasgow branch for Lotus service it would be so much less of a problem. I wouldn't mind the 70 miles it would be to Glasgow and back to get it done, but when it's 150 to Edinburgh I'm having to dedicate pretty much a whole day just to have a f**king fault diagnosed, let alone solved. I've already taken 4 days holiday this year just to travel backwards and forwards to MMC. Like I said earlier, I only bought the car because I thought I would only be going to Glasgow to get a service or warranty work. This is not what I signed up for.

Just a simple thing like being able to use the Glasgow branch for diagnoses would make life much less complicated.

If you dont have a warranty or dont want to wait.... think this is possibly what you are after?

It's under warranty till Dec, and it's apparently a clam off job to fit!

Other garages will some clue should be able to do a diagnostics for you to see what the problem is... Then take it from there before you go for the 150 round trip!!!

I was really busy at work yesterday and couldn't take the 4hrs out to go to MMC and back to have them look at it.

I called and explained and they have ordered me the parts as requested, thus saving me the trip just to confirm that I need them.

I'm chuffed at that, as it's the only negative aspect I have of owning the Lotus is having to travel out there for silly things.
