SELOC copycat attack....

Post by Baggy » Wed Sep 12, 2007 1:50 pm

On the Boot box Bulkhead of my 99 111s.

Saw a post on SELOC where a guy cut out a 4" high by about 18" long "letterbox" to improve access to the coolant rail securing bolts and thermostat housing.

I needed to replace the HT leads on my car and on the 111s, the two coilpacks are positioned in exactly the same place.

So last night I carefully dremelled out the above referenced panel and now have beautiful clear access into the rear of the engine..... Changed the HT leads in about 15 mins incuding re-securing all the HT lead clips.

All with skin on knuckles intact.

Lovely job.....

Would recommend as well worthwhile mod (if you can call hacking a bit of the body work out a mod).

Improved access to coolant rail has vastly improved chances of me fitting the PRRT kit that has been sitting on the shelf in my garage waiting for me to fit for the last 18 months.

Still not likely to happen soon though....

Keep meaning to cut down the bootwall more - mine is crudely hacked around my airbox for the throttle bodies, but I could use more clearance to get at the coil packs...

Angle grinder was used, as I was using too many cutting wheels on the dremel (and getting bored) Does the job.... Looks like Freddy Kreuger did it, but does the job ;)

Proper angle grinder saw blade is whats required. Quite savage though.... Hacksaw would be more controlled but less fun and more effort!

I cleaned up the shed's 'boot release' (fist size hole under the number plate) with an air grinder while at Mark Hutchesons. About 15 mins and a proper smooth edged job. Feels good using WMD on painted bodywork...

Would a few goes with a 4" holesaw and then the grinder not do the job quicker?

Hammer: Instrument used for finding delicate and expensive car parts you never knew existed or knew you needed. Also used to smash your fingers near to the item you wanted to hit :D

I used the angle grinder (but with a cutting disk - I'm not an animal) to cut out the boot wall of Egor - would have been a better mod if I hadn't hacked out the boot catch at the same time :-)

Cheers,
