Is it an S1 or S2 elise

S1 runs EU2 - S2 runs EU3

S1 runs a standard Rover controller and isn't OBD II - S2 runs a Lotus K4 controller with lotus written map and is OBD II complient

I'm not sure but if it's an S1 then it will be an EU2 car and runs the Rover MEMS ecu.

I don't think on board diagnostics were required at the time and I've not seen a way into it.

PS: Robin may have more detailed information on ways into and out of MEMS

MEMS is not generally believed to be end-user or even dealer mappable; of course it would be as it is a microcontroller and s/w jobby; having said that, there is an access protocol that the Lotus Scan tool (and the Rover equivalent) use to talk to the ECU for trouble shooting, code matching, etc.

That protocol is not publicly documented AFAIK.

EU2 and EU3 refer to the Euro emissions legislations that the engines were built to conform to - EU3 engines have fully sequential injection rather than batch injection; EU3 engines also have pre- & post- catalytic converter O2 sensors, plug top ignition and a cam position sensor to aid in injector and ignition timing.

A truly committed individual could reverse engineer the protocol and/or work out how to reprogram the device; but unless you have years of time that you can dedicate to this task, buying a mappable ECU is way easier :-)

Cheers,
Robin
