Induction - Soggy problem

Post by anthonyyule » Wed Dec 19, 2007 2:40 pm

hello.

My car has just performed 2 round trips to MMC in Edinburgh after the MIL light coming on twice in the space of a couple of weeks. (Thankfully I have only had to drive one leg, as MMC have been very good about getting the car picked up and redelivered to me in Aberdeen).

BUT, after the MIL light came on the first time, and when the car was taken to MMC they discovered that the pipercross filter (VIS System) was soaking wet, and this had dragged some water/ dirt into the throttle body

The filter was dried out, the throttle body was cleaned and the car returned to me with the light off. But 2 miles from home on the return journey the light came on again. MMC are replacing the throttle body under warranty, but Bill Y has advised me of his mis-trust in the induction kits for the Yotas, and has suggested that I either go back to the standard airbox, or get myself a filter which wont soak up like a sponge.

The reason for the soaking in the first place was overtaking a truck on a very wet road with lots of puddles  - so kinda a freak event i guess. I DONT have the standard air box because i bought the car with the VIS installed from MMC. I have looked at alternatives but they all seem expensive, and the VIS appears to be a good bit of kit.

PHEW - so, has anyone had any similar probs - does anyone have any thoughts on my situation, and can anyone advise a suitable (or worthwhile) alternative to the VIS which I have??

THANKS!!!! :D

I'm K-series, but also have the Pipercross Viper kit. Mine also came from MMC with the kit on, so I don't have the standard air-box either. I washed mine out this year and the amount of muck/leaves was astounding.

I'm sure I've seen posts on here of other yota owners who have also said to ditch the induction kit due to MIL issues.

The enclosed filter/cold air feed has always been a concern of mine for the very reason of sooking in water. I had thought about running a bypass cold feed in that joined the normal feed somewhere so that if the entry at the left side pod was full of water then air could still be sooked from the other entry (and guessing the water wouldn't reach the filter/TB due to 'path of least resistance' theory).
I have no signature.

have the toyotas got hot wire MAF meters?

sounds very simelar to what happens to my 300zx. filter gets wet, and the hot wire gets soaked. makes it run crap and sometimes brings on the MIL.

The Pipercross VIS is totally crap! I was also unfortunate enough to buy my car with this already fitted.

If you take it off and look at the throttle body you'll be shocked at the amount of fine residue in there - my throttle started sticking due to this. It just simply does not filter dirt and on top of that gives you lots of mil issues!

I've also read of a yota car that was down on power on the rolling road, further investigation revealed that the Pipercross was actually compressing under load and restricting the airflow

So to summarise this fantastic upgrade:

Lots of mill issues
doesn't filter
restricts airflow

I will be getting rid of mine as soon as I can source a standard airbox.

Agree - ditch the pipercross peice of sh*t.

Put one on my 111r, and then had 14 trips to MMC for them to try in an effort with lotus to fix it. The ECU hates it, and the MIL light will trigger. Mine has had a new engine, TB etc and still the MIL light returns.

The new owner has just put the standard airbox back on, so will see if the prob now vanishes.

MMC sold me the Pipercross also, for a fair amount of cash, which has me raging at them.

Best advice for that bit of kit - ebay!
