As suggested I contacted http://www.dashfixer.co.uk/ and I am going to see them this Saturday. They reckon they may be able to rectify and are quoting £150.

Fingers crossed

Thanks for guidance so far :o

Hi David,

This has happened to my 2005 111s twice now. The first time it jumped from just over 8000 miles to over 850,000 miles for no apparent reason i.e. I noticed it when resetting the odometer after filling up with petrol and not jump starting. The 'Stack' was replaced under warranty - although I think all cars after 2003 actually have 'Shurrock' units fitted - for a while the 'Shurrock' name was marked on the dials where the Lotus badge is now. When replaced, the miles are NOT put back to where they were before i.e. you start from zero again. My replacement unit lasted about 2000 miles and then I had a similar problem to the one you describe with the needles. With the engine switched off the RPM sat at 500 and the MPH at 20. With the engine running the revs were always 500 more than they should have been but the MPH was strangely spot on. This unit was also replaced under warranty but again it was started from zero and is only now just at 8000 miles.

I believe, as JJ has also mentioned, that the original S1 / early S2 ‘Stack’ Units were £1000 +. Murray's told me the replacement unit for my car was around £250 so this may be a more 'above board' alternative if 'dashfixer.co.uk' can't help. This would also explain Lotus's switch to the ‘Shurrock’ units.

Murray's should also be able to provide you with evidence supporting why the mileage was zeroed which might be worth the extra expense now should you come to sell your car in the future.

Hope this helps - any further questions then please give me a shout.

Cheers,

John

P.S. If you have not tried the reset technique Robin mentioned then this is also worth a bash.

1. Open the Passenger Door
2. Hold the Odometer Button Down.
3. Turn on the Electrics using the key (but don’t start the engine)

The units software rev. is displayed, the dials should go a bit nuts and with any luck end up back at 0 RPM / MPH

John

Thanks for this useful info :) , I will try the needles trick tomorrow morning then take it to dashfixer tomorrow lunchtime, ..if I still have the problem after both of these, then I will consider the MMC route. :?

Thanks again
David

Unfortunately the reset button/ignition combination didn't rectify the needles issue, although it did show the software version etc. Thanks anyway to Robin and John for suggesting this, it was worth a try.

Anyway, I visited //www.dashfixer.co.uk this afternoon at their premises in Hillington (they also have EuroTune rolling road) and to cut a long story short, they had seen this problem before and rectified both the needles and the mileage (while I had a coffee and watched their plasma TV). Many thanks to JJ for suggesting them.

<BG>

It cost me £150 :? , but it is a lot cheaper than a new unit. :)

Thanks again for everyone's guidance.

I am glad that they were able to help. They are the guys who make the machines that people all over the world use to change mileages and do all that sort of stuff, just so happens they are local.

Scary how easy it is to clock cars and it not be traceable though, they can even re-program things like Range Rover keys so even dealers are unaware.

On that very point David. How do they determine what the mileage should be set back to:?: Waits for lawyers response to this one

They put it back to exactly 33,102 miles. I don't know how they decided on the exact figure. I knew it was defintely over 33K miles but not as high as 34K.

It's done now, and I am happy.

But you are right, ..I do wonder if I had said a lower figure whether they would have just changed it.

And remember folks, it's not illegal to change the mileage (all those S2s with new dashes fitted at 0 miles) - BUT it is illegal to claim it's genuine when yo u come to sell the car ;)
