Better article in this week's Autocar, but not online.
148bhp, 258 torques, 48mpg, 0-60 8.5 secs and no mention of 50-70 but I bet it's nippy. Now I'm not normally a Legacy man, and unlikely to be a New Impreza man (yeuch) but this engine and its future derivatives (200bhp and 350 torques anyone?) might just convince me to try a Legacy sooner rather than later.
Some of the neat features are:
- alloy block and head, so light weight out the box
- no balancer shafts needed due to boxer layout so even more weight saved
- weighs no more than petrol unit
The biggest thing really is that Subaru are now taking themselves into the sensible mpg bracket at long last. Their boxer petrols may have been smooth, torquey and tunable with turbos but even the asthmatic basic ones could not muster above 30-odd mpg. Unacceptable for us high milers.
They claim the project is loss-making for them, they can't share the engine with other manufacturers due to unique boxer layout, and that European volumes won't recoup the investment but there must be SOMETHING there for them. My money is on a huge jump in their European sales, especially when the Impreza WRX TDI arrives
Could my days of Integra dreaming be numbered? Sadly, quite probably. That's family life for you
