Had a right scrap over a seized clutch release fork. As the clutch is not covered and wear and tear is not covered, but the clutch fork seized and consquently burned the clutch... They tried all sorts of nonsense.

Basically I said explain where in your t&cs I am not covered. They didn't have a copy of the t&cs... They were unable to back up anything they tried, had nothing but "seized clutch fork" to work (It must be corrosion - where does it say that??) with and changed their story every time I spoke to them. They also advised the garage to go ahead and fix it then said they would need to inspect it, after it was back together...

Eventually I got through to a stuck up knob who equally could not back up anything he said, and he ended up shouting at me... "Your just not listening!!" while I was being frustraitingly reasonable and calm. I reported him to the AA care line and they paid out in short order...

I would have been happy if they could have backed up anything they said and could show me why I wasn't covered (Well not happy, but I would stop calling them!) but they couldn't fob me off (Both my parents are from Yorkshire, £475 was at stake!!)

That said I know Tut has had his money's worth out of them...

Is the AA breakdown thing any good? Already having Roadside Assistance with them, I've just signed up for their breakdown warranty today (£65 until Nov) and thought it seemed a decent price... but obviously have no experience of how hard it is to claim (do you actually need to have broken down and called the AA man out before you can claim)? I can see what it covers (£500 less £25 admin fee, up to 5 claims etc)... but just wondered whether they are easy to deal with?

I did have the years warranty that I got for buying a Lotus Approved car, but it ran out about a week ago. I was thinking about renewing it (around £500). Although I did have to use it for the fan/radiator recently I did hear that the underwriters can be a complete PITA with their get-out clauses (ie, my fan seized... caused the radiator to blow because it got too hot... there is a consequential damage clause that means that they can possibly get away with replacing the fan, but not the radiator as it was consequential. I think Bill managed to get round it by doing 2 seperate claims). These clauses, and the fact that you can void the cover by getting services done at non-Lotus places are what put me off renewing the official Lotus cover. Makes you wonder how any HGF gets fixed under warranty as I thought many of them can be down to water pump failures etc...

So, I'm now winging it with the AA warranty which leaves me open to use Ali for servicing... hoping someone has got good feedback on the AA.

EDITED: Must add that MMC were very good with my troubles. They dealt with me phoning them in a panic on a Friday evening, dealt with the warranty people, and although the fan was delayed from Lotus, they had it fixed within 2 days of the parts arriving. It's purely the 'approved warranty' I'm not keen on.

/sorry for the hijack
I got the AA cover last year, after reading about it on here. I thought £65 is about half on what I'll spend on a night out , so wont miss it.

Had to use it last month when my alternator went. I went to pick up a parcel from a depot the other side of Aberdeen, on the way there the battery light started to flicker, got to the depot and thought I'll call the AA to be on the safe side. The AA came out, checked it - DEAD. Called the low loader, taking to a garage of my choice. Told him I had the warranty cover and he said just call the claim number with a quote. Did that, started the claim process and they said to get the garage to call so they can get approval to carry out the work. Paid the bill, sent the invoice to the claims department and within 2 weeks got a cheque for the total minus the £25 excess. It was no hassle at all!!! Def worth getting in my books.

It will be the resistor pack, my heater was behaving like yours and took about 3 months before it completely packed in. Total pain in the arse in this weather.

On earlier S2's (no face vents, only windscreen ones) I believe you can replace the resistor pack without removing the clam. Clam off for later models though

Phoned Chrisopher Neil's this afternoon and explained the problem. Resistor pack was her reply.

Covered by the warranty :D So got it booked in to MMC (where is the nervous nail biting emoticon) for Monday morning.

Thank you all for the advice.
