Re: Geo
Anybody done this and were the results ok ? Just wondering what the general thoughts are on doing it this way ? I fancy giving it a go as my car has never had a geo but do not want to mess it up .

Re: Geo
I plan to do mine myself sometime very soon as the car has now had new Track-rod ends, 4 toe links and suspension units. The biggest problem I am having is getting a large enough properly flat surface to do it from. Thought I'd get it into the test cell at work, but EHS shot that one down. One of the powerplant engineers (the guy that used to race the legends) has offered his workshop but has got rid of all the specalist equipment he had. Not that that's an issue; I was planning to go down the pole and string route - but with vernier calipers rather than a rule. Interestingly, another mate, who builds rally cars for a living, has a digital protractor and a home-made tool so that the protractor can be used to read the camber setting.tenkfeet wrote:Anybody done this and were the results ok ? Dunno - got to swap the TRE's and bleed the brakes/clutch. I guess I could pull the finger out and get up early, do that first and then get to the setup bit for lunchtimeish. Need to get poles and fishing line though - will prolly do it in the street in troon. Only needs to be level-ish for toe (will do the camber at a later date, as it's probably not far offwoody wrote:

Swing by troon late morning and we'll grab a coffee and go out for supplies

I have already sussed the poles - aluminium channel from B&Q and have 36 thou lockwire for the 'string' and have a set of vernier and a set of digital calipers.
Re: Geo
I would also be interested but East coasting it tomorrow . Let us know how you get on . I can supply a garage at a later date but its a bit narrow will have to check how level it is .

Re: Geo
I have just done what you are about to do. Digital vernier is the way to go. Makes reading all the measurements much easier. If you are going to do your ride height allow plenty of time, the whole thing takes ages as even tightening the TRE lock nuts knocks out the toe like you wouldn't believe. Got mine to 0.1mm each side after a bunch of f**king around. Ride height was the worst to st up though, wheels off, wheels on a real pain.
I bought an inclinometer off flee bay for £35 and works a treat for castor and camber, made a little frame for it out of box section and some hi-fi spikes. Will post photo's tomorrow if anybody is interested.
Going to have it all checked and if it turns out it's as accurate as I think it is then I will do it myself from now on.

Re: Geo
Well, didn't get done yesterday thanks to my facking migranes making a guest appearance. ALWAYS on a day off
Will post in advance when I plan on doing it, as I think it'd be an interesting excercise and more hands would definately make it easier.

Re: Geo
When I did mine I got the ride height roughly right and then set the springs to balance the corner weights. Biggest issue was the scales at around a grand
Wasnt willing to pay that so popped in to tesco for bathroom scales and bought four of them. They only read up to 200kg but took off the plastic cover and welded a plate to join them as pairs. You need boards the same height as the scales so you can do the front then the back. Its a lot of messing about but its fairly accurate and gave me okay results, total weight of my car was 788kg which should be about right. Either way their accuracy is of little importance as you only need to compare. Just thought some of you might want to give it a try. Of course you could buy 8 scales and make it easier, they are only 6 quid each!
