Steering Column UJ

Post by Shug » Sun Feb 17, 2008 9:10 pm

Any tricks for loosening this? Got to get the rack out for a rebuild, but even with both crimp bolts off, it's still stuck fast. Good soaking with WD40, tried to open it up a bit with a chisel, used various WMDs - no joy...

Fire? Put a burner on it? Might be a bit exciting in the close quarters....

Thought of that, but wiring in close proximity and all the dead leaves in there will catch in a second ;)

I recommend closing your eyes first....

Or even better get someone else to do it....

Will a ball joint splitter fit? Put a fork type one under it and give it a whack? you might want to pack behind it to stop any collateral damage.

Not to be rude shug but you got the tensioner bolts out completly? They go into a notch in the shaft, something I didnt realise until after many minutes with a hammer. Ive done three since and they all just slide off really easy.

Yup - out and lying in the footwell. Did quickly try initially without taking them out all the way, but looked closer and realised that the bolt must sit in a notch, from it's position on the UJ.

Guess mine have just seized - have them soaking in WD and I'll go at it again when I get some time.

Best of luck cause I know how sore that footwell is on your back, I cant walk right for days after. Cheers Craig.

Good news, my father (whose drive the Elise is on) has just called to say he managed to shift it with some effort... Hopefully I'll get back to see the footwell in one piece ;)
