Lumpy Idle

Post by Alex 111s » Mon Feb 04, 2008 2:11 pm

Before you start - It's not Simon Cowell's new reality TV show. :P

My VVC has developed an eratic idle when the engine is up to temperature. on coming to a halt, the revs drop until it almost dies but then ECU applies a blip of revs to keep it going. the car idles fine when it's cold. is the throttle potentiometer on its last legs or would there be a simple solution like adjusting the idling speed?

Idle speed should be controlled by the ecu via an air bypass (IAC) valve, so its not easily settable.

My guess would be a clogged air filter or a clogged air bypass valve. Air filter's easier to check first than the iac valve.

Cheers,

IACV almost definately. Grab a workshop manual from someone for location (on the plenum) torx screws to undo - pull it out and hose it in brake/switch cleaner and wipe off the crud.

Can you do the ecu reset on the VVC? Ign on, throttle 5+ times to floor and back power off. Runs like a POS for a bit then sorts itself out. Works on N/A K's

:cheers

Full marks to Steve & Shug. cleaned out the IACV at the weekend and now things are a lot smoother and the car is a lot more drivable around town/parking/etc.
