pinking noise when running.

check your leads and plugs are fitted right my other car pinked after a service, they had not put plug in properly, it had come loose and the cable was also loose,.

worth a try anyway.

In the past month or so, my engine has developed a tinking noise that comes and goes...
Its a '99 S1 std VVC - around 60k miles

It can run like this for a few minutes and there doesnt seem to be a lack of power, then it goes away again. quite strange... is this just to be expected from a K of that age/ mileage?

I've always had a little pinking, std s1 engine, mostly when cold I think - pre and post HGF, oil changes etc have made no difference.

Stick some super unleaded in it see if it stops.

Pinking is not good!

I've tried all petrols, a couple of tanks at a time, never noticed a difference when it comes to pinking, an I've been looking out for any kind of improvement!

Not good?? I've always been told don't wory about it.... ?

Bear in mind that it might not be pinking. Pinking is bad as it puts the engine under higher combustion pressures as the mixture is effectively igniting before it should, the same as having too much advance. The next step from Pinking is detonation, and that will mean broken bits. I don't know what you can do about it though
