HELP.

Let's say Mrs Pete has just filled the Citroen up with petrol, (it being a diesel). And then realised and limped it home.

What could I do without relying on a garage to fix it. Can I just drain it out with a hosepipe into petrol cans and then take it to the dump and throw it away?

Do I need to pump it out?

You'll need to drain the tank, re-fill with diesel then re-prime what used to be the diesel system to flush out the petrol from the injection circuit. If you're lucky, you wont have a wire mesh in the fuel filler pipe preventing you getting a siphon in there

I had to get a full tank of congealed lard out of a friends work van after a mix up with vegetable oil

If there was not much diesel in the tank and its mostly petrol I would use it in a petrol car . If the tank is 3/4 full any dodgy petrol would get diluted even more . Note : not an Elise. and I am pikey .

I've got a landrover here that will take it too, but thats in Walsall...

If you remove the rear seats you will probably find that there's a lifter pump in the tank in addition to the mega high pressure pump under the bonnet that drives the injection. That means you have a circulation from tank to high pressure pump back to tank. If you pop the hose off the pump output, put another hose on it and then turn on the ignition, it will typically just pump away and you can drain it into tanks. I would do it in batches of 5L at a time. If you find that the pump switches off after a few seconds (because the ECU knows the engine isn't running) then you'll need to pop the connector off the pump and hotwire it with some jump leads from the battery to a bit of cardboard, and then some electrical test clips from there to the pump connector. Don't worry about fire/explosions - the fuel won't burn in the tank unless the tank is nearly empty - when you're down to the last 1/16th of a tank or so, fill it with diesel and keep refilling it with diesel before you reach 1/2 tank for the next few tanks. The petrol will float on top of the diesel, but when stirred, some of it will get mixed with diesel and burnt, so you'll get shot of it slowly but surely.

Lawrence & I successfully drained Katie's 330D this way when she had the misfortune of doing the same thing. The petrol got used in a variety of cars with no problems, but she was on refill before she started so very little diesel mixed in with 60L of petrol.

Drained the tank with a hose this morning, but could only get it to 1/4 tank (on the gauge) and it still seemed to be coming out petrol... Will try your more technical approach tomorrow.

If your siphoning it out the filler cap jack the other side of the car up, that should allow you to get more out.

Petrol siphoned using the trusted Easterhouse approach of hosepipe down the filler cap.

Topped with Diesel and it is running again for the moment...
