Fuel

Post by craigs135s » Wed May 07, 2008 8:55 pm

Over the last couple of days the inside of my car has been stinking of fuel any ideas why this would be? I have not had the blowers on due to it be warm. Dont think that should make any difference though.

Could be the tank seal, the carbon canister the roll-over valve, the fuel cap, etc. Drive it for a while and then whip the fuel cap off - it should hiss - if it does, the system is sealed and then the smell is probably coming from the carbon canister.

On the K-series cars you can remove this and vent the tank to the atmosphere instead by running the breather from the roll-over valve (inside the clam butress next to filler) straight down the cross bar and through the wee gap in the chassis there. Any escaping fuel vapour will be drawn out into the airflow under the car and hopefully not back into the cabin. But, fuel vapour is not supposed to be vented to the atmosphere, which is why we have sealed tanks and charcoal canisters to catch and then re-breath fuel vapours.

On Toyota engines with the very latest in emissions requirements, etc., I wouldn't be surprised if the ECU monitored the charchoal canister and turned the MIL on if it's removed/not functioning properly.

If it doesn't hiss when you remove the petrol cap then you have a leak somewhere, or the cap itself is faulty.

BTW, I'm not 100% sure the Exige even had the charcoal canister, but I guess it must have done. The routing from the canister back to the intake manifold will be different as you have independent throttle bodies.

Cheers,

Thanks Robin.

I filled the car up last night after a 70 mile trip. When i took the cap off it hissed. Also i dont think i have a leak as there is nothing on the garage floor.
