Electrical help in Aberdeen

Post by dlogan » Wed May 14, 2008 7:13 pm

Guys, help, pointers and pelters welcome.
My new (to me) 340r I have owned since saturday, and I have a slight electrical issue.

Press brake pedal. All 3 lights at rear work, but also the r/h main beam comes on. Goes out when pedal released.
Sidelights on and the r/h front and left rear don't come on. Put on main lights and the r/h front comes on, on dipped. Push the brake pedal and main full beam still comes on on r/h front. Still nothing on left rear.

I assume its a dodgy earth but I have no idea where to start looking for the earth points.

Any ideas or recomendations of where I could take it. Don't fancy a warranty trip to MMC just for that. But its pretty embarrassing driving it like that.

Cheers Dave

that sounds more like a multi connector full of water then earthing

See what happens when you put the hazards on and then prod the brake pedal and see if you get the funky everything flashing effect. That normally indicates earth faults.

hazards on, and prod brake pedal, and front r/h light comes on, thats it, no other funkyness.
Undid multiconnector at front r/h side and skooshed wd40 in it, no difference.

Wonder if its to do with the brake switch, but cant even find that!!!

Try wiggling the indicator stalk.. could be that..the mainbeam switch is in there too.

still struggling? Graham Tough in Inverurie is probably the man for the job. Sure he's in the Yellow Pages. Think he used to be mobile not sure if he still is.

if no strange funkiness with flashers on then maybe its not an earth fault as a funky earth would give wierdness as the current going to earth varies with flashy thing

next on the numpty list is has someone managed to put the wrong bulb in the back end

Is your brake lights brighter then your tail lights ?

As some bulbs while they fit in the hole haven't got the correct contacts on the bottom.

As to the brake switch i don't think so as that is a nice simple switch so should have no effects on the front or rear lights. The only place that brake lights and sidelight/headlight wires come in close connection is at the back lights or maybe the fuse box. I would need to see a 340R wiring diagram to have a better idea of what wire goes where.

But check the bulbs at the back as that is an easy numpty mistake

Cheers again guys.
Had tried the indicator stalk, brake switch, rear bulb, changing around, all panels off, general poke around to no avail.

I took it to MMC last saturday and just left it with them.
Turned out to be a wire that had been nipped against the chassis when refitting the body when it was off last yr. Over time its worn through and was shorting out and the return path was to the front light (or something like that).

Anyways, its apparently fixed and I can collect it again on Saturday.(and get rid of the surprisingly good suki shwift.)

Cheers
Dave
